Post: Lerners win ownership race

Lerner Expected To Get NationalsThe Post
MLB sources have told The Post that Bud Selig is now more determined to name the Lerners owners following a news conference by councilmen Marion Barry and Vincent Orange yesterday. They played the race card and accused the Lerners of “renting blacks for a day”

When Selig and other baseball officials learned about the comments late yesterday, they were incensed and strengthened their resolve to back Lerner, according to the sources.

So, they are going to sell the team to the Lerners out of spite? Sounds about right for MLB.

I expect this kind of nonsense from Barry, but I am disappointed in Orange. Whether this helps Orange’s mayorial bid will be an interesting development.

Expect the formal announcement around 5:52 tomorrow evening, unless Bud Selig has a heart attack or something (probably a 50% chance).

Nats Throw One Away on Error in 9thThe Post
Stop me if you have heard this one before — a struggling Nationals starter pitches very well on the road, giving the team an excellent shot at winning the game. Then, the bullpen gives up a run to lose the game 2-1. Last Saturday it was Livan Hernandez, last night it was Ramon Ortiz. Reliever Gary Majewski is the goat for his decisive throwing error. His confidence is gone and Frank Robinson threw out the possibility of a trip to AAA.

Rookie unfazed by facing MetsThe Wash. Times
Former GW pitcher Mike O’Conner is not intimidated by having to face the mighty Mets tonight. That’s nice. He is adjusting to life on the road too (The Post) and, should he remain in the rotation for a Sunday start, a whole section of his family and friends will show up at RFK.

Pulling The Plug On Cable In DC?W*USA-TV
The city council’s plan to force Comcast to carry MASN could result in no cable for anyone in the District. They emergency legislation will be voted on today.

Between this and the latest race-baiting you can see why MLB stayed out of Washington for so long. Of course, had they named an owner in a reasonable amount of time and not strung everyone along, we would not be in this place either…
