It was kind of a crazy game down on South Capitol Street last night, but it was yet another win for the streaking Washington Nationals. They have now won 7 in a row. Additionally, they have scored at least 6 runs in the last four games, meaning that Hard Times Cafe has a lot of wings to give out. Awesome.
The most interesting thing about the 8-4 win was that the Nats succeeded despite giving 18(!) Baltimore Orioles hits: Orioles Oddities: 4 runs on 18 hits in 9 innings (Baseball Reference)
How unprecedented is scoring only 4 runs on 18 hits? It has not happened since 1953 and only one other time since the dead ball era ended. From the DC perspective, this is quite satisfying, though I don’t think the Nats should make a habit of giving up 18 hits. Jason Marquis, the Nats starter gave up 12 of them and did not get the decision. He got a few double plays though which kept him from falling of the cliff he dangled from all night long. He also reached base on a bunt that led to a crucial Mark Reynolds throwing error.
Sean Burnett earned the win for the Nats out of the bullpen. He also batted for the first time since 2009, walking on four pitches. He had some nifty baserunning too, going from 1st to 3rd on a Jayson Werth single. From CSN Washington’s gamer:
“It was pretty cool to be a baseball player today,” he said.
It was also cool for Burnett to flash his baserunning skills, including a picture-perfect, pop-up slide into third base. When’s the last time he did that?
“I haven’t slid, probably, in my major-league career,” Burnett said. “Probably since Double-A. When I was halfway there, I figured, why not get dirty and make [clubhouse manager Mike Wallace] wash the uni.”

I’m loving this 7 game win streak, but I still want more
