REEDSVILLE, Pa. — A little local restaurant on old US 322 in my wife’s hometown has the absolute best french toast I have ever had. After having the Honey Creek Inn french toast last week for the first time in several years, I doubt I’ll feel like having french toast anywhere else, including my own house, anytime soon. I should have ordered 2 or 3 slices instead of one.
I think the secret to Honey Creek’s french toast is the very firm bread they use — probably baked on premises and exclusively for french toast. They apparently use a custard-style french toast mixture, but the actual recipe remains a closely-guarded secret. Legend has it Gourmet magazine tried to get the recipe and was denied.
The rest of my typical meal there is country ham and home fries. The country ham comes right off the skillet as do the non-greasy home fries. That is probably my favorite breakfast in the world.
The service at Honey Creek is pleasant, but tends to be relaxed. Honey Creek is a great stop on the way to a Penn State game if you aren’t tailgating before a noon kickoff or before a 3:30 game.
DIRECTIONS
From US 322 West, take the PA 655 Reedsville/Belleview exit and turn right at the end of the ramp. At the next traffic light, turn left, Honey Creek will be on the left in about 2 miles.
From US 322 East, take the Milroy exit. At the first traffic signal, turn right and Honey Creek will be about a mile away on the right.
