Yuengling becomes largest U.S.-owned breweryThe Morning Call
D.G. Yuengling and Son, who operates the oldest brewery in the United States in Pottsville, Pa. now gets a new feather to stick there hat. After surpassing Boston Beer Co. (Samuel Adams) in sales in 2011, Yuengling is now the largest American owned and operated brewer. Market expansion into Ohio allowed Yuengling to pass Boston Beer Co. in the latter part of last year. The biggest reason of course, is multinational beverage conglomerates buying Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors in recent years. That being said, the rise of Yuengling is still quite impressive.

Last fall, Kevin at Slow States pondered “at what point expansion ruins the allure” when it comes to Yuengling. I cannot say, but based on what I saw on Facebook from Ohioans, the allure was very strong, I wonder if that is still the case. Also, I recall that the Ombudsman had a standing rule for visitors when he lived near Boston — bring me a case of Yuengling in exchange for lodging. Lastly, I recall my wife mentioning she knew a displaced Pennsylvania couple that would fill up their SUV with Yuengling when visiting the Keystone state before heading back to Oklahoma.
