Starter may cost Nationals a bundleThe Wash. Times

It looks like the Nats are either going to have to bite the bullet a pay premium for a pitcher or go without.

Ballpark opponents down to last strikeThe Wash. Times

It would be nice to believe that the opposition will get caught looking on strike three, but that isn’t going to happen. Adrian Fenty, Jim Graham, David Catania and of course, Marion Barry (file photo) are going to be swinging for the fences at a rally today. They can still blow this thing, Marion Barry, despite being a inept public official with a history of womanizing and drug abuse still wields power that is as strong as it is inexplicable. I know he is not on the council yet, but he can still cause problems.

HARDCORE ROAD GEEKDOM

New easy-to-read road signs based on Penn State researchUniversity Relations

Here we have a combination of interests of mine, Penn State and transportation. Apparently, the Clearview typeface that we are starting to see on PennDot road signs is a Penn State development. Despite this pedigree, I prefer the classic “Highway Gothic” styles. In fact, I even like the old “button-copy” style with the raised reflectors and am disappointed that it was discontinued. I think Pennsylvania used button copy into the early ’90s, as did the District. Maryland was still installing button copy in the early ’80s on I-95 in Baltimore, but the ultimate holdout was New Jersey, which discontinued it in 1997. Hopefully, they will stay away from the Clearview, which is just does not look at good as Highway Gothic — safety be damned!

If you like the Highway Gothic font, you can download “Blue Highway” from Larabie fonts like I did.

Warner Offers $824 Million Transportation PlanThe Post

I have been working late (which means until 6 p.m. or so, I get to work at 7 a.m.) and dealing with the “reverse” commute back to Pentagon City everyday. For one, I do not know how people do it regularly, I have probably spent almost three hours of the past two days just getting back to my apartment, 14 miles away. Two, anyone who opposes more Metro funding and/or the Dulles line are fools. Thankfully, Gov. Mark Warner is addressing this pressing need with some proposals.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRENDA!

The long absent Brenda Mayrack has returned to the land of blogs again and informs us that she has been ill, without telecommunications and was worried her dog would eat her. Fortunately, she is feeling better, the phone is back in service, the puppy is fine and all seems to have worked out. Also, the other day she celebrated a birthday, so happy birthday Brenda!
