WASHINGTON, D.C. — Perhaps the “problem” of going to baseball games for those who blog about them, particularly ones that end at 11:23 p.m., is that the blogger really does not have time to write about them. Here we are, some 13+ hours removed from the Washington Nationals win over the New York Mets last night and I am now just getting to write about it. I have sympathy for those who have to write on-deadline about such extra-innings affairs, unless of course they whine about the location of the press box. For the record, Adam Kilgore of The Post (Nationals vs. Mets: Bryce Harper drives in winning run in 12th inning), Mark Zuckerman of CSN Washington (Harper does it again with walk-off winner) Amanda Comak of The Wash. Times (Harper gives Nats 12th-inning walk-off win in wild affair with Mets) all wrote some pretty good gamers last night.
I just don’t have time to process all of this and get into writing. Simply put, the Mets were trying to give the game away and the Nats would let them. Errors, passed balls, and the like kept the Nats alive, but they wouldn’t finish the job. Rick Ankiel striking out after going up 3-0 with 2 outs and the bases loaded was infuriating. I kept yelling for him to just keep taking pitches. He didn’t and I simply wanted him DFA’ed before he got back to the dugout. Ian Desmond on the other hand, was clutch, tying the game 3 times after the 8th inning. Bryce Harper finally got the winning run home going the opposite way. He’s awesome and a joy to watch. Get down to the ballpark if you haven’t already and see him. Crazy game.
