Old-school NFL remembered in Colts-Bears matchup – USA Today
What is so old-school about Indianapolis vs. Chicago? Even though the Colts have been around since the 1950s, they have only been in Indy since 1984, so I don’t think old-school works here.
To sort out what teams are old-school, I have created The Facenda Test. If a team, in its present form, was not around when John Facenda was narrating NFL Films, it can’t be old-school in any way or form. If you want to go hardcore about it, only the Giants, Eagles, Redskins, Bears, Packers, Steelers, Browns, 49ers, and Lions count since they were around pre-expansion and stayed in their city since then. That eliminates the Rams, Ravens, Cardinals which moved post-1960.
I think the case can be made to include teams of the pre-Super Bowl era, which allows for the Vikings and Cowboys and half the AFL teams. Come to think of it, you have to because Dallas played in the Ice Bowl, how much more old school can you get?
Indy gets lumped in with the Panthers, Jaguars, Titans, and Texans as new wave franchises.
