Since time immemorial, the Washington Wizards always start the season 9-20, right? When they reached 9-9 on December 2, I referenced it:

Steinberg is right, so I promised I’d retire the meme if they reached 10 wins before 20 losses. I didn’t think it would take two weeks though. Bradley Beal came through with the game-winner (pay attention John Wall) with about 7 seconds to go:
The New York Knickerbockers than didn’t use a timeout and Carmelo Anthony bricked to end the game.
I think Tony Kornheiser started the 9-20 meme.
