Jason Bergmann went seven innings and allowed only one run in his second start after coming off the DL. The Nats hitters gave him a 5-run cushion, but Jesus Colome gave up a couple of runs to make it closer. Jon Rauch came in and promptly walked a batter to load the bases, but got out of the jam. Chad Cordero pitched the ninth for his 30th save.

The Nats are now in fourth place and would have to go 1-23 to lose 100 games this year. While I wasn’t on the 120 losses bandwagon, I figured they would be much closer to 100 loses than they apparently will be unless the bottom completely drops out.

This offseason, we can expect the Nats to go after pitching, pitching, pitching, right? Nope — free agent hurlers have not had a strong return of investment lately (The Wash. Times).

OF Justin Maxwell and LHP Ross Detwiler are getting called up today (The Post) to get a taste of the majors.
