It takes special effects to make Landmark Mall vibrant

An Amazon Prime van parked in front of the former Landmark Mall in Alexandria, Va.

How ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ took over an empty mall to create a rad ’80s experienceUSA Today
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The local dead mall was brought back to life for Wonder Woman ’84.

If Landmark Mall ever had a heyday, it was before I moved to Alexandria. My brother pointed out that the Chik-Fil-A was the anchor store. He was correct.

Updated 12/23/2020: The food court didn’t even open until 1990

I can’t say whether the recreation is accurate, but it certainly captures the spirit of malls at their zenith. I suspect that like Val Kilmer playing a better Jim Morrison than Jim Morrison, WW84‘s Landmark exceeds the real thing.

The present-day situation at Landmark is shown above – parking for Amazon vans and a homeless shelter.

Redevelopment of Landmark has been talked about since 2007. It officially closed in about four years ago.

Review: ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ is a rousing, retro throwback to Christopher Reeve’s ‘Superman

That’s about as high a praise you can give a superhero film to me. I guess I should see the first movie if I’m going to see the second, because who doesn’t want to watch familiar places on the big screen your own TV?

Plus, it has Pedro Pascal from The Mandalorian as a villain and Sgt. Gatreer’ kid as something other than Zack Morris Capt. Kirk.

Bonus fact

Original Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter is a big Washington Capitals fan. No word on Gal Gadot’s favorite NHL team

Oh just for fun – enjoy the earworm!

Another proposal for the Landmark site

On December 22, 2020, news that Landmark would become the site of a new Inova Alexandria Hospital broke. Seems like a decent plan, but so have several others.
