Music Tuesday: “Elephant” by Tame Impala

Elephant, not in a Tame Impala song

I work at a creative agency that plays music during the day. Occasionally, the playlist hits on something I haven’t heard before. Even better, sometimes we hear something that I have heard, but didn’t know the name of…

“Elephant” by Tame Impala is one of those lost songs. I can distinctly remember hearing it driving to Atlantic City in March 2014 and another time in Lucky Strike during a company outing in Fall 2017.

I thought this was a deep 1970s John Lennon cut and looked for it several times over the years.

Last fall, I heard it again – I was talking to a colleague at the time and heard it come on and “though, aha, there’s that John Lennon song I’ve been looking for” and patiently waited until our conversation was finished. I went up to the DJ station and was surprised to learn it was called “Elephant” by Tame Impala. Wouldn’t have gotten that one.

It’s a pretty tune for drowning out stuff that isn’t good.

Tame Impala is an Australian act that’s primarily one guy, Kevin Parker. The Wiggles sorta covered it too:

My kids weren’t into the Wiggles. I wonder if I would have connected this to the “lost John Lennon song” I tried to find for a decade if they did.

As for the rest of the Tame Impala catalog that I have heard, it’s perfectly cromulent, but nothing else has caught my fancy like Elephant.

Music Tuesday appears occasionally though it might be more often for a while…
