NO RELIEF IN SIGHTNY Post
C Jesus Flores, a former Met prospect picked up as a rule 5 draft pick by the Nats, singled in the go-ahead run in the 7th inning. The Nats would score three more times in the inning on singles by Felipe Lopez and Cristian Guzman (2 RBI).

Both squads benefited from strong pitching from their starters. Tim Redding earned his fifth win by pitching six innings of two-hit ball. One of the hits was a solo home run by former National, Brian Schneider. Claudio Vargas, also a former National (who was left unprotected by Jim Bowden for some reason), gave up 3 hits and two runs for the Mets, earning the loss.

The Mets picked up two runs off of Saul Rivera, but the Nats had built up a four-run cushion, so they proved to be mostly harmless. Luis Ayala and Jon Rauch (8th save) finshed the win off.

Ryan Zimmerman hit another home run, a solo shot, in the eighth. He is up to 7 for the season now, five of them since May 1.

Johnson’s wrist is hurtingThe Free Lance-Star
1B Nick Johnson came back to D.C. to have a MRI on his ailing right wrist. He apparently strained a tendon is listed day-to-day. Given Johnson’s injury history, you have to wonder if he is headed to the DL. Aaron Boone will play at first base in Johnson’s absence, since Dmitri Young is rehabbing at AA Harrisburg. Boone is hitting well, almost 100 points higher than Johnson. Oddly enough, despite hitting only .220, Johnson still has a .415 OBP.

RHP Jason Bergman returns to the Nationals today at 1:35 after three straight solid starts at AAA Columbus. The Mets are putting RHP Mike Pelfrey on the hill.

Young likes SenatorsPatriot-News
Speaking of Dmitri Young, he likes what he sees out of the AA Harrisburg Senators, the best team in the Eastern League.
