So Long, Virginia? – Washingtonian
Northern Virginia sends millions to Richmond—and gets pennies back. It’s one of the world’s most dynamic regions, while other parts of the state are still fighting the Civil War. Why not secede and become the 51st state?
This feature on the divide between Northern Virginia and the rest of the commonwealth that is a good read. In a more ideal world, Northern Virginia would become its own state*, but that simply is not going to happen. As much as “real Virginia” dislikes our culture here, they sure do not mind being subsidized by our 21st-century economy. In lieu of secession, I want us to get more appropriate representation and a majority of our tax dollars, not too mention some respect and recognition from downstate.
*This argument is not unique to Virginia either. Illinois (Chicago vs. the rest), Pennsylvania (Not Philly vs. Philly), New York (NYC/Long Island vs. upstate) and California (North vs. South) come to mind as having similar situations.
