This Nats bullpen is just absolutely brutal:
Despite Detwiler, Down to Defeat – The Post
Had the Nationals not furnished Ross Detwiler’s first major league start with the exact sort of defense and relief pitching one finds in the Eastern League, he would have earned a win and some well-deserved appreciation. Instead, the Nationals committed four errors. Their bullpen, allowing nine earned runs in four innings, dynamited the lead Detwiler left behind. With an impromptu replication of Class AA fundamentals, Washington lost to the Pirates, 12-7, at Nationals Park, dropping its fifth straight and obscuring the promise supplied by its former first-round pick.
Bullpen wastes Detwiler’s solid start – The Wash. Times
The efficiency with which the Washington Nationals’ bullpen can eviscerate any shred of hope on a given night is so pure, so unflinching, that it’s worth wondering whether it’s the thing this team does best.
An offense that has become one of the best in the National League has been unable to pile up enough runs to keep up with the escalating tally for the opposing team. Even games that should be tinged with promise, such as Monday night’s, wind up ending the same way.
The bullpen is just absolutely horrible (Chatter). Here is how you quantify it –a combined 1-13 with a 6.68 ERA. The offense is scoring no less than five runs a game, but never winning. Poor Ross Detwiler, called up for last night’s game. He left after five innings with a lead, but the bullpen gave up another nine runs! Thom Loverro likes what he sees in Detwiler though.
So, it all adds up to a 12-7 Pirates win. They brought their racing pierogies (Let Teddy Win) from Pittsburgh too.
