Capps holds lead; Nats top Phillies, 6-5 – The Post
The Washington Nationals got their first victory of the season in an exciting travel day win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. They never trailed in this one, but were tied until Ryan Zimmerman doubled home the winning run in the 7th. Closer Matt Capps 9th inning high wire act (Nats Insider) had runners at the corners with 1 out, but he was able to get a couple of pop ups that sealed the deal, earning him his first D.C. save.
Willie Harris was the official hero and thus forced to don a silver Elvis wig.
Starter Craig Stammen was pulled after 5 innings, but probably could have stayed in a little longer despite giving up 4 runs.
Nyjer Morgan turned a “single into a triple” in centerfield at one point.
Zimmerman’s throws to first haven’t been great, but 6’6″ Adam Dunn has been there for him. This could be a problem moving forward.
Sean Burnett had a rough bullpen outing. Tyler Clippard settled down and got the win.
Being 1-2 is a lot better than 0-3, by more than just a win.
The Cheesesteak/Half-Smoke Challenge now has the same record as the standings. I’m one game back and still in it.
With the rain coming, I had to take down the bunting and flag from my patio, just mere minutes after the win. It seemed a little unfair.
