Portland accused of anti-gay remarks – The Collegian
This is not the first time that there have been allegations that Penn State women’s basketball coach Rene Portland has been running players she thought were lesbians off the team.
Searching The Collegian archives, I came up with a letter to the editor from 1991 on the subject. When I was an undergrad, an article about players leaving the team got picked up by The Times.
Portland’s history is very troubling. Regardless of the reason, harassing your own players is poor coaching. Whether she likes it or not, the university has an anti-discrimination policy that she is expected to follow.
