Over the last decade or so, I have written about my experiences as a &#8220;commuter skier&#8221; in the Mid-Atlantic. I typically get in 1 or 2 daytrips a season and the intention here is to help others in situations make that one trip count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;re probably as past the pandemic as we&#8217;re going to get, so it&#8217;ll be interesting to see what that means for skiing. Fewer crowds? I doubt it. Stay up to date on you vaccinations though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2007, I have been writing firsthand reports of my ski trips on my blog. It&#8217;s rustic, prone to ice and not as big as they claim, but get a little bit of fresh snow and it&#8217;s a really fun mountain that I really want to visit again. Sadly, I think it&#8217;s only been fully opened for a couple of days the last few years after a big storm dumped on it. If you have the means after a big storm, it&#8217;s worth your time.\n\nIt&#8217;s also an inverted lodge (on top of the mountain) despite being the highest skiable elevation in Pennsylvania. I had a fantastic time in <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2022\/01\/skiing-january-22-2022-elk-mountain.html\">2020<\/a>, <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2020\/01\/skiing-january-18-2020-elk-mountain.html\">2022<\/a>, <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2023\/01\/skiing-january-28-2023-elk-mountain.html\">2023<\/a> and <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2025\/02\/skiing-february-9-2025-elk-mountain.html\">2025<\/a> there &#8211; well-run and pretty scenic. Biggest plus &#8212; shared passed with Big Boulder, so you can ski two hills in one day. The black diamond runs are really fun and the scenery is stunning. The Poconos, it ain&#8217;t. I had my best day of skiing here, right after the <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2014\/02\/alexandria-va-pitchers-and-catchers-day-storm-snowfall-total-at-8-a-m-8-5-inches.html\">Pitchers and Catchers Day Storm in 2014<\/a>. <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2022\/03\/skiing-march-13-2022-massanutten-recap.html\"><strong>I returned in March 2022<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2025\/01\/january-26-2025-half-day-of-skiing-at-massanutten.html\">2025<\/a>. At only 90 minutes from the Capital Beltway, it&#8217;s an excellent option for D.C. commuter skiers. It was well-run under Snowtime, but there are grumblings that Vail is doing a half-assed job.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I skied a few other places a looong time ago, well before I had  web site, so no full reviews&#8230;<br><br><strong>Liberty<\/strong>, Fairfield, Pa.<br>The closest ski area to D.C. has 600+ feet of vertical and if I-270 isn&#8217;t bad, you can get some runs in after work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Roundtop<\/strong>, Lewisberry, Pa.<br>Closer to the Harrisburg, Pa. this ski area has 600+ feet of vertical as well. It&#8217;s 30-45 minutes further than Liberty. Given a choice, Whitetail is probably a better bet for the D.C. commuter skier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wisp<\/strong>, McHenry, Md.<br>Maryland&#8217;s only ski area is on the other side of the Eastern Continental Divide off of I-68.
