Tuesday was the 50th anniversary of the announcements that the original Washington Senators were moving to Minnesota and an expansion team would be taking their place. DC Sports Bog has a look at how The Post covered the situation<\/strong><\/a>. The original Senators, who left because Calvin Griffith was a racist, became the Twins and won the pennant four years later. The expansion Senators moved after the 1971 season and became the Texas Rangers, who just won their first pennant and lost to the San Francisco Giants in the World Series last night. Obviously, I’m rooting for the San Francisco and not “some jerk town with the single boast it is equidistant from Dallas and Fort Worth.”<\/p>\n

I did a little more research on Griffith and what I saw supported previous accusations that he was just a terrible human being. I found the whole “I\u2019ll tell you why we came to Minnesota. It was when we found out you only had 15,000 blacks here. Black people don\u2019t go to ballgames, but they\u2019ll fill up a rassling ring and put up such a chant it\u2019ll scare you to death. We came here because you\u2019ve got good, hardworking white people here” Minneapolis Tribune<\/em> article<\/b><\/a> from 1978. Griffith is fairly equal opprutunity in insulting his players and just being a total prick.<\/p>\n

Griffith also had some similar problems early in his Twin Cities tenure<\/b><\/a> Minnesota Post<\/em> only there were complaints filed with the state.<\/p>\n

D.C. was better off with Griffith, but unfortunately, his defection from the area started a chain reaction of bad baseball that has not yet been recovered from 50 years later. Washington has had 17 seasons of baseball since then, with 33 year gap, and only one season, 1969, was a winning one. Another, 2005 was a break-even one. No playoffs to speak of either.
