{"id":10859,"date":"2010-11-01T11:45:15","date_gmt":"2010-11-01T15:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/?p=10859"},"modified":"2010-11-01T11:45:15","modified_gmt":"2010-11-01T15:45:15","slug":"60-years-ago-earl-lloyd-of-washington-capitols-integrated-the-nba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/2010\/11\/60-years-ago-earl-lloyd-of-washington-capitols-integrated-the-nba\/","title":{"rendered":"60 years ago Earl Lloyd of Washington Capitols integrated the NBA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I learned from <em>USA Today<\/em> (it was in the NBA briefs, can&#8217;t find a link) this morning that yesterday was the 60th anniversary of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoophall.com\/hall-of-famers\/tag\/earl-f-lloyd\"><strong>Earl Lloyd<\/strong><\/a> joining the Washington Capitols which integrated the NBA. Yes, there was a team called the Washington Capitols (with and &#8220;o&#8221;) in the league&#8217;s early days. <strong>Red Auerbach<\/strong> was the first coach, but he had moved on after 1949. <\/p>\n<p>Lloyd, an Alexandria native, played at West Virginia State prior to joining the Capitols. He is in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame<\/b><\/a>. Lloyd&#8217;s stay with the Capitols was limited though; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainyhistory.com\/events\/1951\/january_9_1951_112127.html\"><strong>the team folded on January 9, 1951<\/strong><\/a>. He went on to play for the Syracuse Nationals and Detroit Pistons. <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/nba\/columns\/story?columnist=mcmenamin_dave&#038;page=Lloyd-101031\"><strong>ESPN has a big profile on Lloyd<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the Washington Wizards could honor Lloyd sometime soon. Maybe I need to email Ted Leonsis. <strong>UPDATE:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tedstake.com\/2010\/11\/02\/thanks-yes-we-knew\/\"> He says they have something in the works<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DID YOU KNOW?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There was also an ABA team called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.remembertheaba.com\/Washington-Capitals.html\"><strong>Washington Caps<\/strong><\/a> in the 1970-71 season. They had been the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.remembertheaba.com\/Oakland-Oaks.html\"><strong>Oakland Oaks<\/strong><\/a>, but moved to D.C. for a season before becoming the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.remembertheaba.com\/Virginia-Squires.html\"><strong>Virginia Squires<\/strong><\/a> (all links in this paragraph point to remembertheaba.com).<\/p>\n<p>The second black player in the history of the NHL, <strong>Mike Marson<\/strong>, played for the 1974 Washington Capit<strong>a<\/strong>ls, the franchise&#8217;s first season.<\/p>\n<p>On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Washington Redskins were the last to integrate. <strong>Bobby Mitchell<\/strong> became the team&#8217;s first black player after he was acquired from the Cleveland Browns for <strong>Ernie Davis<\/strong>.
