A fairly optimistic preseason for Penn State football took a wrong turn yesterday when coach Joe Paterno<\/strong> was knocked over by a wide receiver, likely 5′ 7″ Devon Smith. Details are of course sketchy, but Paterno apparently has a hairline fracture in his arm and\/or hip. Pelvis was initially included in the injuries. Yikes. Nate Bauer of Blue White Illustrated\/Rivals broke the story yesterday<\/a>, which was followed by a quick press release from Intercollegiate Athletics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This injury is just the latest malady in a tough five years for Paterno<\/a> (Patriot-News<\/em>). Reports over the summer and from Big Ten Media Days indicated that Paterno was stronger than he had been for a while, so this is a setback. How serious is yet to be determined, but this isn’t good. Penn State Media Day, has been rescheduled to Thursday from Tuesday, so perhaps this isn’t as serious as initially feared. Officially<\/em>, Paterno did keep coaching after getting injured and had to be persuaded by the training staff to get looked at. It sounds like he spent a few days in Mount Nittany Medical Centre for observation.<\/p>\n

Media Day will be a circus now with Paterno’s health being the big story again — the Rob Bolden-Matt McGloin quarterback battle just got moved off the front page. That might be a silver lining in this latest black cloud. I fully expect breathless coverage of Paterno’s health on twitter and elsewhere early Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The Nittany Lions and Paterno’s future just got even more cloudy. The coach will be 84 in December and is in the last year of his contract. He has been injured enough times while coaching that it has become a pattern. This EDSBS essay from 2008<\/a> comes to mind as well. Those factors could easily lead someone to conclude this is Paterno’s final season, but I’ve seen him bounce back too many times to count him out. Whether that is the right course for Paterno and the university remains to be seen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
