Once again, Long Island native Eric McErlain<\/strong>, the godfather of sports blogging,<\/a> is here for some guest prognosticating. You may recall his earlier appearance talking about the Mets<\/a> prior to their first series against the Washington Nationals in 2011. This time, Eric is talking J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS in advance of their trip down I-95 to play the Washington Redskins.<\/p>\n

WFY: The New York Jets have lost the last two AFC Championship games. Were they overachieving to get there?
\n<\/strong>
\nEM: <\/strong>The Jets are a hard team to figure out. They often lose regular season games to teams that are clearly inferior, then turn in incredible performances against the best teams in all of football. Can you name any team that between the 2009-10 seasons managed to defeat New England, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh on the road?<\/p>\n

WFY: How are the Jets only 6-5 this season? What in the name of Pat Leahy is going on up there? <\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>Weakness in the running game has meant the Jets have had to put more of a load on the shoulders of Mark Sanchez. As often as not, he’s come up very small. That’s incredibly disappointing considering the weapons he has to use. There are simply too many turnovers, including an alarming number that have been immediately returned for touchdowns. If not for the Stevie Johnson penalty for excessive celebration combined with the subsequent flubbed kickoff, the Jets don’t win yesterday. I don’t know how long they can continue to rely on the other team making mental mistakes in order to pull out victories.<\/p>\n

WFY: What about coach Rex Ryan is he in jeopardy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>Absolutely not. He’s not the problem, Sanchez is.<\/p>\n

WFY: Is Mark Sanchez 1) a franchise quarterback 2) overvalued because he went to USC and plays for a New York team 3) unfairly criticized because he went to USC and plays for a New York team?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>1) Can you name me any other quarterback who won four road playoff games in the first two seasons of his career? He’s shown flashes of brilliance, but we still don’t know if he can carry the load on his own.<\/p>\n

2) Expectations are always high for any quarterback. Play in New York, and the expectations soar to another level.<\/p>\n

3) Nope, Sanchez has earned all of the bile generated by Jets fans this season.<\/p>\n

WFY: Why did you pick Jets over the Giants?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>My Dad was a Jets fan, and they trained at Hofstra University, which was only about a 15 minute ride from the house I grew up in.<\/p>\n

WFY: Are you going to the game?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>Wife and I are looking for tickets now. Coming off a Washington win, seats might be harder to come by this week.
\n
\nWFY: How is the Met Life Stadium experience? <\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>It’s awfully sterile. I’ve been to stadiums where the fans are louder. Whenever the least thing goes wrong with the Jets, the fans just bail. The book on the stadium for the Jets ought to be to score first and take the fans out of the game early. We’ve been conditioned to failure and have come to expect it.<\/p>\n

WFY: Do you miss Giants Stadium at all? <\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>Not for a second. For most of the time the Jets played there, it was always a difficult drive from Long Island. Over the years, I only made it out there 3 or 4 times — though I did get to see Art Monk break the consecutive games with a reception record against the Lions. He did it on the first play from scrimmage, and then the rest of the day was a Barry Sanders clinic.<\/p>\n

WFY: What about Shea Stadium, did you ever get to a Jets game there?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>Plenty. First time out there was in December 1973 for Jets-Colts. Sat right on the field at about the 30-yard line nearest to the closed end of the stadium. I had never been so cold in my life. Didn’t see them win at home in person until a game against the Lions in 1979.<\/p>\n

WFY: Who is the greatest New York Jet of all time, your lifetime or both?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>Until they win another Super Bowl, it’s still Joe Namath. When he had his one chance, he got it done. Everyone else: Richard Todd, Ken O’Brien, Chad Pennington, Matt Sanchez and all the rest came up small when the team had a chance to go to the big game. Even Parcells failed to get the Jets to the promised land.<\/p>\n

WFY: Both New York teams wear fauxback uniforms, do you prefer the Jets current kit or did you like the green helmet era?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>I was happy when they went back to the original design. The current uni means Super Bowl III, especially when they’re wearing white. It’s evocative of the greatest upset in football history. Who wouldn’t want to wear it?<\/p>\n

As for the green helmet days, it’s indicative of ineptitude and promises unfulfilled. When I see that helmet, I think about Richard Todd tossing an INT to end a home playoff comeback in 1981. I see Mark Gastineau taking a stupid roughing the passer call against Cleveland in the 2nd round of the playoffs with the Jets holding a 10-point lead in the 4th quarter. If he doesn’t draw that flag, the Jets go on to Denver to play the Broncos in the AFC championship. I’ll never forget that the Jets beat that Denver team soundly on the road on a Monday night earlier that season.<\/p>\n

And oh yeah, I think about Rich Kotite and 1-15.<\/p>\n

WFY: Do you watch Jets games with the sound turned down and the radio turned up?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>The Jets radio broadcast team has changed frequently over the years, so I don’t have a whole lot of loyalty to Bob Wischusen and Marty Lyons. For me, the voice of the Jets will forever be Marty Glickman, who besides being an incredible broadcaster was an even more impressive human being. The guy was on the 1936 Olympic track team with Jesse Owens.<\/p>\n

WFY: Who are the standouts for Jets media coverage?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>I used to read Bob Glauber all the time before Newsday put up its stupid firewall. I’ll never forget that Richard Todd once stuffed Steve Serby from the NY Post into a locker. But the dean of Jets coverage and history in Jerry Eskanazi of the New York Times even though he’s not on the beat any longer.<\/p>\n

WFY: Oh the NJ-NY teams your follow (Jets, Mets, Islanders), which championship meant the most?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EM: <\/strong>I was too young to remember the Jets Super Bowl win — I was barely 16 months old at the time. As for the Islanders, they were too good for words at times, but tickets were always wicked expensive, so I didn’t get to the Coliseum terribly often at all. The Isles were solely a television experience. That would leave the Mets. I was at Games One, Two, Six and Seven in New York in 1986 and I was with my Dad. I feel like I grew up at Shea Stadium.<\/p>\n

Then again, if the Jets go to the Super Bowl, there’s no way I’m not going. Mind you, I’d go even if I couldn’t get a ticket to the game. I know I’m not alone, as I’m sure that Gang Green would descend on the host city like locusts.<\/p>\n
