That system had been in decline following World War II. Street cars served the nation&#8217;s capital for a century. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.si.edu\/\">Smithsonian<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhistory.si.edu\/\">National Museum of American History<\/a>&#8216;s On the Move Exhibit Web site has a feature called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhistory.si.edu\/onthemove\/exhibition\/exhibition_4_1.html\">A Streetcar City<\/a>&#8221; about Washington&#8217;s street cars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcstreetcar.com\/\">Street cars are expected to return to D.C.<\/a> in the next few years with tracks being installed on H Street NE and in Anacostia.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to see what the old-time street cars were like, head up to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dctrolley.org\/\">National Capital Trolley Museum<\/a> in Colesville, Md. I went once as a kid and will probably be going again this spring. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dctrolley.org\/faqs.htm\">FAQ<\/a> is also worth reading because it explains that traditionally it was &#8220;street cars&#8221; in Washington, instead of &#8220;streetcars.&#8221; It seems that custom is no longer observed, though I&#8217;ll do it. The difference between trolley, street car and light rail is also explained.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DC_Streetcar\">the Wikipedia page on D.C.
