There was actually a basis for <a href=\"http:\/\/dcbaseballhistory.com\/2012\/02\/and-the-winner-is\/\">as explained by D.C. Baseball History<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n29 March \u2013 Hereafter the Washington baseball team will be known as \u201cthe Nationals.\u201d The committee of local newspaper men appointed to select a name for the reorganized Washington. Base Ball Club to take the place of the hoodoo nickname, \u201cSenators,\u201d held its first meeting Friday after noon and decided to call the new club \u201cNational,\u201d after the once famous National Club of this city that once played on the lot back of the White House.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>HOODOO NICKNAME!<\/p>\n<p>That is interesting, but the &#8220;Est. 1905&#8221; patch was still kind of stupid, especially since Nationals had been used during the 1800s for D.C. teams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember those silly &#8220;ESTABLISHED 1905&#8221; patches the Washington Nationals wore in the 2005 season?
