{"id":1727,"date":"2007-01-12T17:56:00","date_gmt":"2007-01-12T17:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2007\/01\/more-talk-of-tolls-on-i-80.html"},"modified":"2007-01-12T17:56:00","modified_gmt":"2007-01-12T17:56:00","slug":"more-talk-of-tolls-on-i-80","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/2007\/01\/more-talk-of-tolls-on-i-80\/","title":{"rendered":"More talk of tolls on I-80"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"post-article-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/pg\/07012\/753244-147.stm\"><b>PennDOT would profit from making I-80 toll road, turnpike officials say<\/b><\/a> &#8211; <i>Post-Gazette<\/i><br \/>Here&#8217;s a shocker, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission wants to install tolls on I-80; an idea that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2004\/03\/letter-to-editor-tolls-on-i-80-not.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">keeps<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2004\/03\/beware-ides-of-marchhoward-kurtz-in.html\">coming<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2004\/03\/rather-convincingly-too.html\">up<\/span><\/a>. Turnpike commisions always want to build or acquire more roads so they stay in business. They argue it is preferable to being bought or leased like other toll roads. They have a point there, but I think neither should happen. Roads like I-80 were largely paid by the federal gasoline tax. I think charging tolls on them would amount to double taxation. Also, do you really want the commission taking over more roads? They have been around for over 60 years and the Pennsylvania Turnpike is still substandard compared to its peers.<\/p>\n<p>If it does happen though, it would be kind of funny to start calling Pennsylvania the tollbooth state though.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\">&copy;MMX William F.
