A visit to Great Falls Park this past weekend enlightened me to that and it all made sense.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wfyurasko\/8099632918\/\" title=\"Untitled by wfyurasko, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8045\/8099632918_319d1528d6.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Untitled\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Great Falls &#038; Old Dominion Railroad Company was a subdivision of Washington &#038; Old Dominion Railroad. The NPS explanation says that &#8220;light rail&#8221; was opened on July 4, 1906 to Great Falls Amusement Park. Within a year, 1.6 million trips went up the line.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wfyurasko\/8099624208\/\" title=\"Trolley mock-up by wfyurasko, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8464\/8099624208_81da26f217.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Trolley mock-up\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/va738_small.gif\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/va738_small.gif?resize=50%2C50\" alt=\"Virginia Secondary Route 738\" title=\"va738_small\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18842\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/va309_small.gif\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/va309_small.gif?resize=60%2C50\" alt=\"Virginia Route 309\" title=\"va309_small\" width=\"60\" height=\"50\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18843\" \/><\/a>In 1934, the Great Falls line was discontinued and replaced by Old Dominion Drive which is mostly a two-lane road between Great Falls and its terminus in the Cherrydale neighborhood of Arlington. In McLean and near the Glebe Road intersection and Marymount University, Old Dominion Drive is four lanes, but I do not anticipate any additional widening.
