The nearly 50 year-old restaurant is a throwback to the days when lunch on and around Capitol Hill was for compromising on votes, not being entertained by lobbyists. There is still a bell at the front that will ring when there is a vote coming up. Supreme Court justices Potter Stewart and Byron White used to go figure out how to trick Warren Burger to vote their way while lunching there.

Last Saturday, as part of an early birthday celebration, Erica took me to the Market Inn. It was her first visit there and my first trip back since 2005 or so when I would go with my friend David on occasion. Since we waited until that day to make reservations we got stuck in the corner of the bar area at tiny table. We didn’t mind much because we wanted to hear the piano. On this night, a bass accompanied it. We found the music to be a good volume that allowed it to be heard without overpowering conversation. The walls of this area are covered with tasteful vintage paintings and photographs or young women.

Erica started with Oysters Rockefeller which she endorses. I was content with the complementary roll. For her entrée she had the Broiled Neptune Delight, a platter that included sea scallops, shrimp, Fillet of Orange Roughy and a Crab Cake. She enjoyed the meal though it proved to be too much for one sitting. She had half of it packed up to take home.

I ordered the Broiled Jumbo Fillet Mignon (10 oz) with french fries. I was disappointed in the meat, it was one of the least flavorful fillets I had ever had. In this past I had done very well with steak there, so this caught me by surprise. The fries were fine.

To drink Erica had an enjoyable white wine, though I can’t remember which one. My Manhattan was a lot “louder” than the whisper of vermouth I asked for when I ordered. It is quite possible there was some confusion because the waitress did not appear to be a native English speaker. Previously I had always ordered a martini and been quite pleased with how it was mixed. The bourbon selections were not terribly inspiring by the way, with no small batch selections on the menu; gin, scotch and vodka had greater variety offered.

Despite being a little disappointed with my food and drink this time, I will still return to the Market Inn, though likely just for drinks. The ambiance is excellent for solving the problems of the world. Perhaps Congress needs to head their more often.

The Market Inn, DC, Capitol Hill

©MMX William F.
