WASHINGTON 5 Philadelphia 4 (13 innings) (ESPN<\/span> Boxscore<\/span><\/a>)<\/p>\n

It took 13 innings and 15 pitchers (8 Nats, 7 Fleas) but the Nats earned the first win of the 2nd Annual Halfsmoke-Cheesesteak Challenge<\/span>. 1 down, 17 to go.<\/p>\n

Things were looking good for the Nats headed into the 7th inning. A 2nd inning Brian Schneider<\/span> home run put three on the board and a Dimitri Young<\/span> drove in Felipe Lopez<\/span> in the third. Jason Bergmann<\/span> was cruising along, having given up only a run through six. However, he stayed in at least one batter too long in the 7th, getting only an one out and putting to runners on. Saul Rivera would allow them to score, but the Nats still had a one run lead heading into the ninth — enter Chad Cordero<\/span>. The closer couldn’t get the deal done, allowing a tying run before finishing the inning.<\/p>\n

It seemed like Nats left about eight runners on in the 7th through 10th innings. In the 13th Lopez sacrificed Chris Snelling<\/span> to finally win the game 4 hours and 16 minutes after it started or about 11 hours until batting practice today.<\/p>\n

Phillies fans were pretty quiet until the ninth inning.<\/p>\n
