Business Journal<\/em>\/<em>WTOP<\/em>) according to Team Marketing Report. This isn&#8217;t surprising, nor is it good news for fans. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The sports marketing publisher has created a Fan Cost Index, which includes four adult average-priced tickets, two draft beers, four soft drinks, four hot dogs, parking for one car, two game programs and two baseball caps.<\/p>\n<p>The the combined cost of those things at a Nationals game is $236.46, up 19.3 percent from last year and the fourth-most expensive for an MLB team.<\/p>\n<p>A 16-ounce beer at Nats Park costs $8.25, the most expensive beer among MLB ballparks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t see a beer for under $9 at Opening Day. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure if asked, there would be remarks about the D.C. area&#8217;s high gross income and the rising cost of fielding a competitive team, blah blah blah.<\/p>\n<p>The question that needs to be asked of Nats COO Andy Feffer, but probably won&#8217;t be, is whether the television rights situation is the reason for higher concession prices. MLB gave Baltimore Orioles owner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/category\/peter-angelos-is-a-coward\">Peter Angelos<\/a> 90% of the Nats television rights in 2005 as compensation for territorial infringement. The Nats gain back 1% a year until they reach 33%. Angelos created a network, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/tag\/masn-sucks\">MASN<\/a> (which was excluded from most D.C. area cable systems well into 2006) that compensates the Nats for carrying the games &#8212; something under $30 million a season. The commissioner of baseball, Bud Selig, sets the rate every five years and is dragging his feet on making a decision for this coming term. The Nats want $100 million annually (some of the biggest markets get that much), while Angelos\/Orioles say $35 million. The Nats can&#8217;t realize their economic potential through through television like every other team in the majors. It doesn&#8217;t appear <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2012\/12\/nats-tv-rights-mlb-trying-to-fix-the-angelos-problem.html\">there has been any progress on the dispute since December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, asking the team if higher concession prices is worthwhile because while a link can&#8217;t realistically be proven, the answer given would be interesting to hear.<\/p>\n<p>Now, having to subsidize the Angelos (I don&#8217;t even think the Orioles are seeing much of the Nats TV revenue, I think he&#8217;s keeping it for himself) doesn&#8217;t absolve the Nats from charging too much for concessions in my opinion. There is no reason a mass-produced beer like Budweiser or Miller should cost $9. A half-smoke doesn&#8217;t have to cost $8.25. Take a dollar or two off of those items and I&#8217;ll probably buy more of the course of a season and not think as much about how expensive it is to go to a ball game. With demand higher for tickets than any time since 2008, the Nats may not take it seriously, but the good times won&#8217;t last forever and there are limits to what the market will support.
