Thankfully, I was wrong.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Levale Speigner&#8217;s<\/span> first start was not terribly good, giving up two runs in the 1st and 4th innings. The Nats responded in the bottom frame of both of those innings though, scoring a run both times. <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Ryan Zimmerman<\/span> doubled in Ronnie Belliard in the 1st and then homered in the 4th. In the fifth, <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Ryan Church<\/span> cleared the bases with a 3-run double to put the Nats ahead. Earlier in the inning, Belliard had sacrificed CF  <b>Ryan Langerhans<\/b> to put the Nats within one. Atlanta starter <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Kyle Davies<\/span> was on the hook for all six Nationals runs. The bullpen produced a strong outing with <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Ray King<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Wilson Abreu<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Saul Rivera<\/span> and <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Chad Cordero<\/span> all earning holds. <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Jon Rauch<\/span> picked up his second save with a perfect ninth. <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Billy Traber<\/span> got the win.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post-article-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/05\/16\/AR2007051602809.html?hpid=moreheadlines\"><b>Church, Bullpen Are Nats&#8217; Saviors<\/b><\/a> &#8211; <i>The Post<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post-article-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washtimes.com\/sports\/20070517-123743-9377r.htm\"><b>A little Church music<\/b><\/a> &#8211; <i>The Wash. Times<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Despite winning 5 of 6, <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Thomas Boswell<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/05\/16\/AR2007051602889.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">is not bouncing off the walls with excitement<\/span><\/a> (<span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Post<\/span>). Quite the opposite in fact, he is very wary of the rotation as it is now &#8212; full of stopgap pieces like Speigner and <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Micah Bowie<\/span>. He hasn&#8217;t given up hope though and wonders if the team can have a strong second half and bring excitement to RFK for its final few months as a ballpark.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Southeast Jerome Williams<\/span> is the latest Nats pitcher with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/05\/16\/AR2007051602925.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">torn<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washtimes.com\/sports\/20070517-120845-1517r.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">labrum<\/span><\/a> (<span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Post<\/span> &#038; <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Wash. Times<\/span>). The Nats probably lead the league in torn labrums over the last three years. Don&#8217;t expect Williams back anytime soon. At least <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">John Patterson<\/span> has resumed throwing again.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Jim Bowden<\/span> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/a-732749~Evaluating_this_year_s__pleasant_surprises_.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">talking Bonus Babies<\/span><\/a> in &#8220;his&#8221; <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Wash. Examiner<\/span> column.<\/p>\n<p><i>Express<\/i> calls Manny Acta an &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.readexpress.com\/read_freeride\/2007\/05\/halffull_nationals_stay_optimistic.php\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">unapologetic optimist<\/span><\/a>.&#8221; It must be the Successories.<\/p>\n<p>I am not sure I am completely sold on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fredericksburg.com\/News\/FLS\/2007\/052007\/05162007\/284266\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Cristian Guzman not being worse than Mario Mendoza thing<\/span><\/a> (<span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Free Lance-Star<\/span>), so I&#8217;ll reserve judgement until I see another four months of this level of play.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\">&copy;MMX William F.
