\nOver the years, I have been critical of the Washington Nationals for failing to bring former D.C. players into the organization in some capacity. The most notable is Frank Howard<\/a>, most beloved member of the expansion Washington Senators. The late Chuck Hinton<\/a>, a former Senator and head coach at Howard University was another player who should have been involved in an official capacity. Why Stan Kasten and Andy Feffer haven’t been able to make this all happen is a mystery.<\/p>\n

Although not a former Washington player, Washingtonian Mamie ‘Peanut’ Johnson<\/strong> was one of three women to play in the Negro Leagues and the only one to pitch. Starting in 1953, she played for the Indianapolis Clowns for three seasons, going 33-8. After she finished playing, she became a nurse, but never stopped loving baseball, coaching locally and at one time owning a Negro League memorabilia shop. A field in the District was named after her after several years of community lobbying.<\/p>\n

The Nats did draft Johnson in the Special Negro Leagues Draft in 2008<\/a>. I’d like to see them draft her into a regular role as an ambassador for the team. Come on Feffer, this isn’t hard!<\/p>\n
