Two runs in the first, one run in the second, two runs in the third and fourth innings. It was pretty ugly for the home team and starter <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Jason Simontacchi<\/span>, who admitted that he &#8220;couldn&#8217;t execute pitches.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Nats bats were active, but ineffective. Thirteen runners were stranded, notably <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Nook Logan<\/span> at third base in the first inning. He got there on a walk and a throwing error with no outs, but <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Ryan Zimmerman<\/span>, who has now gone two weeks since driving in a run, couldn&#8217;t get him home.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post-article-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/\"><b>Nationals Extend Run Of Offensive Futility<\/b><\/a> &#8211; <i>The Post<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post-article-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20070703\/SPORTS02\/107030080\/1005\/SPORTS\"><b>Nats see what they&#8217;re missing<\/b><\/a> &#8211; <i>The Wash. Times<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t understand why <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Alfonso Soriano<\/span> got booed last night. He came here, did what he was told (eventually) and had an amazing season. The club made no effort to give him a new contract, so he followed the money elsewhere. What&#8217;s the problem? If you want to boo anyone, boo <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Stan Kasten<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Both Thom(as)s, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/07\/02\/AR2007070202028.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Boswell<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20070703\/SPORTS07\/107030082\/1005\/SPORTS\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Loverro<\/span><\/a> have columns in <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Post<\/span> and <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Wash. Times<\/span>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>I miss Soriano, but I can understand why the Nats didn&#8217;t make a play for him. He is expensive and unlikely to come near the season he had last year. Signing him at 8 years for $136 million, like the Cubs did, would have been foolish.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Micah Bowie<\/span> is on the DL for synovitis or inflammation of his left hip, retroactive to June 28. Tim Redding, called up from AAA Columbus, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/07\/02\/AR2007070201957.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">will make his first start<\/span><\/a> (<span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Post<\/span>) in the majors since 2005 tonight in Bowie&#8217;s place. It could be a cup of coffee for Redding because GM <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Jim Bowden<\/span> indicated the call-up came because it is Redding&#8217;s turn to pitch.<\/p>\n<p>Nationals co-owner <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Mark Lerner<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20070703\/SPORTS02\/107030061\/1005\/SPORTS\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">is lobbying Bud Selig for an All-Star game<\/span><\/a> (<span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Wash. Times<\/span>). It could be tough getting selected though, as four other NL teams recently opened new ballparks and have yet to play host to a game. Back during the dark times of fighting over the ballpark with MLB, I wish the D.C. Council had made a deal guaranteeing an All-Star game within five years of the ballpark opening; I think they had some leverage there.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Chad Cordero<\/span> was just presented with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20070703\/SPORTS02\/107030060\/1005\/SPORTS\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">his 2005 Rolaids Relief Man of the Year ring<\/span><\/a> (<span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Wash. Times<\/span>).
