In order to accommodate the line that will serve the Dulles Corridor, the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority brought back original designer,<strong> Laynce Wyman<\/strong> to figure<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2011\/06\/metro-brings-back-lance-wyman-to-update-iconic-map.html\"> to create an updated map<\/a>. An initial version <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2012\/03\/wmata-next-metro-map-released.html\">debuted in 2012<\/a> in conjunction with Rush Plus.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.washingtonpost.com\/g\/page\/local\/whats-new-in-metros-map\/450\/\">new map (with annotations from The Post)<\/a> keeps the basic design that dates back to the 1970s. There are several differences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"square\">The Metro lines are not as wide<\/li>\n<li type=\"square\">For the Blue-Orange-Silver portion, there are little white prongs attached to the station circle<\/li>\n<li type=\"square\">Abbreviations are also being used for station names &#8212; i.e. Morgan Boulevard is now Morgan Blvd<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One change that isn&#8217;t mentioned is that the line colors are different shades than what was used for about three decades. The Yellow Line seems the least changed.<\/p>\n<p>As for the Silver Line itself:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now, Metro has turned its focus to what its chief marketer calls \u201craising awareness\u201d of the new, $6 billion rail line that eventually will run to Dulles International Airport and parts of Loudoun County.<\/p>\n<p>Research among focus groups and from surveys conducted this year showed that only 45 to 55\u2009percent of riders in the Washington region are aware of the rail addition, Metro said.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves some transportation and land-use experts skeptical of whether \u2014 and when \u2014 the Silver Line will meet its ridership expectations. As one of the country\u2019s most expensive transportation projects underway, the Silver Line is seen as an important test of whether drivers will abandon their cars and ride a transit line.<\/p>\n<p>The Silver Line extension being built from East Falls Church will be 23 miles long when completed. The first phase is 11 miles and includes four new stations in Tysons Corner and one in Reston. Construction of the second phase, which will run to Dulles International Airport and into Loudoun County, is expected to start in mid-2014. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I would like to know more about the survey &#8212; which riders are most aware or unaware of the Silver Line. If they are Red Line riders, that&#8217;s probably not too big a deal. If they are Orange Line riders in Arlington, we&#8217;ll that&#8217;s a different story.<\/p>\n<p>I still wish WMATA had gone with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2011\/05\/how-would-you-redesign-the-metro-map.html\">a letter\/number suffix naming convention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On a lighter note, I think I&#8217;ll wait until the Silver Line is completed to Loudoun County before I order <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welovedc.com\/2009\/11\/18\/and-now-a-metro-shower-curtain\/\">a Metro map shower curtain<\/a> (<em>We Love DC<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup>Finding an old Metro map was harder than I expected. The small one I found turned out to be from <a href=\"http:\/\/hardballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2012\/08\/23\/the-nationals-the-metro-and-late-night-games\/\">Hardball Talk<\/a> of all things, from last season when the Washington Nationals in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2012\/08\/nats-wants-district-to-pay-for-overtime-metro.html\">a typical tone-deaf move<\/a>, argued about keeping Metro open in case of late-games.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With new Metro map, agency tries to market Silver Line &#8211; The Post The new Silver Line, currently expected to open in early 2014, requires a new Metro system map.
