Zeppelin&#8217;s hopes for a high-tech, dirigible-driven future largely went up in smoke with the Hindenburg. But today&#8217;s helium-filled design could propel us into a new age of flight, minus the airborne conflagrations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2014\/09\/goodyear-new-blimp\/\">How Goodyear Revamped Its Zeppelin for a New Age of Flight<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/player.cnevids.com\/embed\/54060d4369702d09d14d0000\/5176e89e68f9daff42000013\" frameBorder=\"0\" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowtransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nSo, they&#8217;ll look different and fly faster.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/science-news\/world-helium-shortage-expected-balloon-drastically-f6C10963426\">there is a bit of a helium problem <\/a> (<em>NBC<\/em>) right now. Perhaps using this scarce and expensive resource for birthday parties wasn&#8217;t the best idea. Oops.<\/p>\n<p>On a lighter note, blimp pilots are rarer than astronauts:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/othersports\/blimp-pilots-have-a-great-vantage-point-but-lead-solitary-lives\/2014\/06\/26\/7557266a-fd38-11e3-932c-0a55b81f48ce_story.html\">Blimp pilots have a great vantage point, but lead solitary lives<\/a> &#8211; <em>The Post<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"290\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/posttv\/c\/embed\/3e1a5182-fd7d-11e3-beb6-9c0e896dbcd8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Blimp pilots are kind of lonely, but they get a great view. I&#8217;m sure my mother, who worked for MetLife, appreciates that their blimp was featured too. <\/p>\n<p>So, when does Tom Wolfe write about these brave airship pilots? He could call it <em>The Light Stuff<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve mentioned it before, but growing up in Vienna, we lived below the flight path of blimps headed to Dulles Airport. Mostly, it was the Goodyear blimp, <em>Enterprise<\/em>, but once or twice it was the McBlimp. My mom called Dulles to ask about it and a presskit came in the mail a few days later. We should have kept that one. Here&#8217;s how west Texas reacted to McBlimp back in 1985:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GamO31yVdJ8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Also, my grandparents also lived outside of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/tag\/lakehurst\">Lakehurst, N.J.<\/a> a major hub of airships, even after the Hindenberg.<\/p>\n<p>So, I&#8217;m a blimp guy or airship enthusiast I guess. Naturally, the stories linked above was a must-read and even blog about&#8230;for posterity.<\/p>\n<p>Now can we please let commercial blimps fly around BeltwayLand again?
