Nats Safely in Fourth With Fifth Straight Win<\/b><\/a> – The Post<\/i><\/p>\n

Nationals like the new math<\/b><\/a> – The Wash. Times<\/i><\/p>\n

Last night’s victory made it five consecutive wins for the Nationals after a disasterous western swing. With a tough September ahead of them, sweeping a series is just what they needed in their quest for fourth place. Another quest, losing less than 100 games, was completed last night with their 63rd win of the season. They are on a pace to win 73 games which would be two more than last year. Whether they can keep that pace up will be determined as they take on the top three of the division for most of the rest of the season. They have an opprutunity to play spoiler and comeback to win the 2nd Annual Half-Smoke\/Cheesesteak Challenge<\/b> for me as well.<\/p>\n

Last night, Tim Redding left after 2 1\/3 innings when he got hit in the elbow by a batted ball and dove for it. Despite leaving early, he lasted considerably longer than Florida starter Sergio Mitre how gave up three runs over 2\/3 of an inning before leaving and attack a wall fan in the dugout. How dare he damage our otherwise pristine RFK Stadium!<\/p>\n

Both teams went though six relievers with the hometown nine adding three additional runs while the visitors could only add two. RF Austin Kearns<\/span>, who has gotten his average up to .269, had three hits. C Brian Schneider<\/span> led with 2 RBIs.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, I was searching from something on WWN<\/span> and saw the post about two hecklers<\/span><\/a> from a tobacco shop that gave Manny Acta<\/span> a hard time when he was a Mets coach. Back then they offered Acta a peace cigar and yesterday he took them up on it<\/span><\/a> (The Wash. Times<\/span>) at their shop. By the way, I think I know someone in the spirits business who probably wishes had had heckled Acta and offered him a champagne toast to make it all good.<\/p>\n

Nick Johnson<\/span> plans to lose weight<\/span><\/a> (The Post<\/span>) in the offseason as he is at least 20 lbs over his playing weight and considerably more than what the media guide says. Also, Shawn Hill is probably going to participate in a throwing program in the offseason to make up for innings not pitched this year. He will have to have surgery on his non-throwing shoulder though.<\/p>\n

Ross Detwiler<\/span> impressed the coaching staff during a throwing session<\/span><\/a> (The Wash. Times<\/span>) last night.<\/p>\n

C Jesus Flores<\/span> took fielding practice<\/span><\/a> (The Wash. Times<\/span>) after dropping two popups the night before.<\/p>\n

Ryan Zimmerman<\/span> won the Nationals Roberto Clemente Award<\/span><\/a> (WJLA<\/i>) because he “combines outstanding skills on the baseball field with devoted work in the community.” He is up for the MLB award as well.<\/p>\n
