{"id":2456,"date":"2007-09-22T11:25:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-22T11:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2007\/09\/i-80-tolls-protest.html"},"modified":"2007-09-22T11:25:00","modified_gmt":"2007-09-22T11:25:00","slug":"i-80-tolls-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/2007\/09\/i-80-tolls-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"I-80 tolls protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got an email from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ooida.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association<\/span><\/a> about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.landlinemag.com\/todays_news\/Daily\/2007\/Sep07\/091707\/091907-01.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">a protest against tolling I-80<\/span><\/a> being held in Harrisburg on Monday. <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">U.S. Rep. John Peterson<\/span> will be there. I still think he is doing the right thing for the wrong reasons though.<!--Yesterday, <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Joseph Brimmeier<\/span>, executive director of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.centredaily.com\/happy_valley\/2007\/09\/the-case-for-i-.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">visited<\/span><\/a> the <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">CDT<\/span> and made the case for I-80 tolls. A <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">CDT<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centredaily.com\/329\/story\/212354.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">editorial<\/span><\/a> notes that either tolls on I-80 or leasing the Pennsylvania Turnpike is on the way. There is also this interesting passage\n\n<blockquote>Contrary to what the toll-bashers are saying, according to Brimmeier \u2014 taking umbrage at the enemy's tactics \u2014 not one dime collected from I-80 motorists would go to mass-transit systems in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh or anywhere else. By statute, toll money can be used only for highways and bridges \u2014 \"They know the law,\" a somewhat annoyed Brimmeier said.\n\nBut money from other aspects of Act 44 \u2014 the sale of bonds and what Brimmeier called a \"public-public partnership\" with the Turnpike Commission paying $83.5 billion to the state Department of Transportation over 50 years \u2014 would go to each of the state's 73 transit systems (including the Centre Area Transportation Authority). This is not taking money from central Pennsylvania to fund buses and trains only in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, as those \"putting fear in the minds of their constituents\" are telling us, he said.<\/blockquote>\n\nWell, that is different from what Peterson has been saying, no? It is a shame that he is playing that card in his effort to stop tolling I-80. I'd like to see it stopped on principle. Taking a previously \"free\" road that was built by the federal highway trust fund (gas taxes) is a bad precedant. I particularly don't want to see it happen in Pennsylvania because the commonwealth already gets more than its fair share of money for highways, it just hasn't spent it well. It seems stupid to reward the bad behavior of Pennsylvania politicans who were reckless and lazy about this for so long, only to pass midnight legislation without the benefits of studies.--><\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\">&copy;MMX William F.
