Six more weeks of winter?! Have we even had two? Nevertheless, my annual Mid-Atlantic skiing post is finally here. The best snow of the season just fell on many of regional ski areas.<\/p>\n<p>I missed out on skiing last year because of <em>real life<\/em>, but I&#8217;m hoping to make it back on the slopes again this year, possibly on President&#8217;s Day Weekend. I hope you are <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2008\/01\/exercise-suggestions-for-skiers.html\">doing your exercises<\/a> to get ready for the season. The Nile Mile is my favorite slope anywhere in Pennsylvania. They <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/forum\/88594\">are seemingly cash-strapped or just don&#8217;t know what they are doing<\/a> (<em>DCSki<\/em> forum). Sad!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"20%\"><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/tag\/whitetail\">Whitetail<\/a>, Mercersburg, Pa.<\/td>\n<td width=\"10%\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u25a0\u25a0<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"10%\">6<\/td>\n<td align=\"left\" width=\"50%\">Well run, perhaps the best run out of all of these. Only 90 minutes from the Beltway, yet over 900 feet of vertical drop. Only downside, it&#8217;s dry.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Rating &#8211; on a scale of <span style=\"color: green;\">\u25cf<\/span> (lowest) to <span style=\"color: black;\">\u2666<\/span> (highest).<br \/>\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-25485\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_20170203_184020_579-1024x1024.jpg?resize=960%2C960\" alt=\"Ski tags\" width=\"960\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_20170203_184020_579.jpg?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_20170203_184020_579.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_20170203_184020_579.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_20170203_184020_579.jpg?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_20170203_184020_579.jpg?resize=1536%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_20170203_184020_579.jpg?resize=2048%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"square\">The best day on the slopes I&#8217;ve ever had may have been <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2014\/02\/february-15-2014-skiing-massanutten.html\">Massanutten in 2014<\/a>, but it was a bluebird day two days after the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2014\/02\/alexandria-va-pitchers-and-catchers-day-storm-snowfall-total-at-8-a-m-8-5-inches.html\">pitchers &amp; catchers day storm<\/a> &amp; the views were great.<\/li>\n<li type=\"square\">I find myself wanting to back to Blue Knob for bowl skiing again.<\/li>\n<li type=\"square\">I went to Liberty, Roundtop &amp; Wisp as a kid, but that&#8217;s too long ago to count.<\/li>\n<li type=\"square\">My only trip outside of the Appalachians was at Eldora in Colorado one spring break, but only for a morning.<\/li>\n<li type=\"square\">I also skied Montage Mountain near Scranton one Friday night on a radio station $10 lift ticket promo (thanks Jumpin&#8217; Jeff Walker!) in college &amp; had a good time. Why did we only do that once INSTEAD OF EVERY WEEKEND?! Youth is wasted on the young&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Where the snow flows like wine<\/h3>\n<p>The <em>Post<\/em>&#8216;s Capital Weather Gang lists the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/capital-weather-gang\/wp\/2016\/12\/02\/these-are-the-top-5-snowiest-ski-mountains-in-the-mid-atlantic\/\">regional ski areas with the most snow<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Timberline (&amp; Canaan Valley), <a href=\"http:\/\/wvmetronews.com\/2016\/11\/10\/corridor-h-draws-closer-to-completion\/\">Corridor H (US 48) is now extended almost to Davis<\/a>, about 10 miles closer, so that should shorten the drive a bit. I&#8217;m hoping it encourages greater infrastructure investment which is the only way I&#8217;d go back there.<\/p>\n<p>Almost every other Mid-Atlantic ski area that isn&#8217;t in West Virginia is within short distance of the interstate highway system and reside in places where transportation departments (even PennDOT!) see the value of getting drivers to the mountain so they can put money into the local economy.<\/p>\n<h3>Independent Snow Sport Media<\/h3>\n<p>The long-time go-to for Washingtonians interested in <em>commuter skiing<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/\">dcski.com<\/a>, run by M. Scott Smith (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/2012\/02\/qa-with-m-scott-smith-of-dcski-com.html\">2012 interview<\/a>). He has in-depth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/resorts\/\">resort profiles<\/a> as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/26768286366\/\">facebook page<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/forum\/\">forums<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/skidome2.skidome.org\/\">Skidome.org<\/a> focuses on the southern Pennsylvania resorts closest to D.C. and has <a href=\"http:\/\/skidome.org\/skidome2\/join\/\">discounts<\/a> for regular skiers.<\/p>\n<p>According to some (like the NBA; the NHL realized the folly &amp; realigned divisions), DC, Virginia &amp; Maryland are the Southeast. I suppose the case for most of the Old Dominion is fairly strong, but semantics aside, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skisoutheast.com\/\">SkiSoutheast<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skisoutheast.com\/resorts\/\">profiles<\/a> &amp; news of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia &amp; more southern resorts. It&#8217;s enthusiastically updated often, a must-read if you want to go to a WV resort or further south.<\/p>\n<p>Can a family ski every Pennsylvania ski area in one season? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCprPqEpQEyRpKXkeEFSLOtw\">LiftTicketTV<\/a> will find out.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skitheeast.net\/\">SkitheEast<\/a> is more about selling stuff, videos &amp; New England, but still kind of interesting.
