Winter isn&#8217;t coming, winter&#8217;s already here. To that, I say:<\/p>\n<h2>Don&#8217;t hate winter, use it!<\/h2>\n<p>First, I previewed <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2018\/11\/winter-2018-2019-broomball-update.html\"><strong>broomball in the D.C. area<\/strong><\/a>, now let&#8217;s talk about skiing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Snow started falling in the Alleghenies by October 13.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It&#8217;s our closing weekend for summer operations. The snow guns were roaring on November 10 in several places, even in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Thanksgiving openings are possible. Big Boulder in the Poconos will be open this weekend. Snow Time was the parent company that operated Pennsylvania resorts Liberty, Roundtop, and Whitetail \u2014 each within a 90-minute or so drive of Washington, DC. The sale of Snow Time to Missouri-based Peak Resorts marks the end of an era for the Mid-Atlantic ski scene.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The history of Snowtime and its founder, <strong>Irv Naylor<\/strong>, is an interesting one that I was unfamiliar with until this great article.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicopiniononline.com\/story\/news\/2018\/09\/24\/peak-resorts-buy-snow-time-resorts\/1409931002\/\"><strong>Whitetail, Roundtop &amp; Liberty resorts to be sold for $76 million<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; <em>Public Opinion<\/em> (Chambersburg, Pa.) I launched their first web site way back when.<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean for DC area commuter skiers? Probably not much yet, but the Peak Pass might make that trip to Hunter Mountain and its 1500 feet of vertical drop seem more inviting. What happens in the 2019-2020 season will be interesting. They can ski cheap at participating ski areas with the SkiPa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skipa.com\/kids\/4th5th-grade-snowpass\"><strong>Snow Pass<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I signed my oldest kid up for it last year and it worked out very well for us &#8211; $40 for the pass which meant free lift tickets at participating resorts. The <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2017\/12\/skiing-december-30-2017-whitetail-recap-praise-for-the-pa-skipass.html\"><strong>first time we went<\/strong><\/a>, I got a break on rentals and lift ticket as well and we spent a $55 out of pocket that day.<\/p>\n<p>I wish other states (or <em>commonwealths<\/em>) had this as well. Maybe start with 5th and 6th graders next year, Virginia?<\/p>\n<p>There is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skipa.com\/deals\/first-time-program-deal-offer\"><strong>a first-time skier package<\/strong><\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p>h\/t Ed Fowler of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skidome.org\/\"><strong>Skidome.org<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Are you doing your exercises?<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;m an evangelist for daily wall-sits leading up to ski season. Earlier in the decade, I&#8217;d do them around 2 o&#8217;clock every day at work; co-workers even joined in. It makes a huge difference, even just a week ahead of time. More than and you really see how much easier and better the skiing winds up being. <a href=\"http:\/\/skidome.org\/skidome2\/exercise\/\"><strong>SkiDome has more on getting in skiing shape<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Don&#8217;t be that guy<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2018\/02\/skiing-camelback-presidents-day-sunday-2018.html\">Last year&#8217;s Camelback trip<\/a> was a friend&#8217;s first in a decade. He used his old skis. The vertical drop is amongst the best in Pennsylvania. I have lots of great memories here, but its a bit far for over 800 feet of vertical and huge crowds on holiday weekends. Biggest plus &#8212; shared passed with Big Boulder, so you can ski two hills in one day.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\" width=\"20%\"><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2014\/02\/february-15-2014-skiing-massanutten.html\"><strong>Massanutten<\/strong><\/a>, Harrisonburg, Va.<\/td>\n<td width=\"10%\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u25a0\u25a0<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"10%\">1<\/td>\n<td align=\"left\" width=\"50%\">It&#8217;s small, hence Massa-nothin&#8217;, but the black diamond runs are really fun and the scenery is stunning. The Poconos, it ain&#8217;t. I had my best day of skiing here, right after the <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2014\/02\/alexandria-va-pitchers-and-catchers-day-storm-snowfall-total-at-8-a-m-8-5-inches.html\">Pitchers and Catchers Day Storm in 2014<\/a>. Another one I want to get back again.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\" width=\"20%\"><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2013\/01\/2013-skiing-timberline.html\"><strong>Timberline<\/strong><\/a>, Davis, W.V.<\/td>\n<td width=\"10%\"><strong><span style=\"color: green;\">\u25cf<\/span><span style=\"color: green;\">\u25cf<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"10%\">1<\/td>\n<td align=\"left\" width=\"50%\">T-Line has been a chronic impending disaster for years, but that may no longer be impending. It&#8217;s poorly run, broke and may not even open. DCski.com is sick of all the forum threads on this underachiever. Maybe they will just go belly-up so someone like Peak can snatch it on the cheap.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\" width=\"20%\"><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/tag\/whitetail\"><strong>Whitetail<\/strong><\/a>, Mercersburg, Pa.<\/td>\n<td width=\"10%\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u25a0\u25a0<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"10%\">9<\/td>\n<td align=\"left\" width=\"50%\">The elevation is under 2000 feet, but is over 900 feet of vertical drop. At only 90 minutes from the Capital Beltway, it&#8217;s an excellent option for D.C. commuter skiers. It may be the best run ski area around and the are finally getting a liquor license. The Peak purchase will be viewed closely.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In the distant past, I took trips to Liberty, Roundtop, Wisp, Montage Mountain and Eldora (Colorado).<\/p>\n<p>Oh near-ish mountains I have yet to visit, Wintergreen is near the top of my list. Seven Springs gets praise for its apres ski, but I&#8217;m not sure 750 vertical is worth the trip when Blue Knob is closer. Since I tend to ski with Pennsylvania-based friends, Montage and Elk mountains off of I-81 look like a tempting alternative to Camelback but they are probably overnighters, as is Snowshoe. A friend, since departed for Costa Rica, used to say he wouldn&#8217;t ski south of Hunter Mountain, that&#8217;s intrigued me.<\/p>\n<h3>Independent Snow Sport Media<\/h3>\n<p>Several sites provide important coverage of our region&#8217;s ski areas. They are great for finding special deals, getting insight on what ski areas are really like, conditions and the community of Mid-Atlantic skiing.<\/p>\n<p>The long-time go-to for Washingtonians interested in snow sports has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/\"><strong>dcski.com<\/strong><\/a>, run by M. Scott Smith (<a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2012\/02\/qa-with-m-scott-smith-of-dcski-com.html\">interview from <strong>7-ish years ago<\/strong><\/a>). He has in-depth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/resorts\/\"><strong>resort profiles<\/strong><\/a> as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/26768286366\/\"><strong>facebook page<\/strong><\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/forum\/\"><strong>forums<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/skidome2.skidome.org\/\"><strong>Skidome.org<\/strong><\/a> focuses on the southern Pennsylvania resorts closest to D.C. and has <a href=\"http:\/\/skidome.org\/skidome2\/join\/\">discounts<\/a> for regular skiers. The site is quite extensive and it turns out, one of my co-workers (now in Utah) was a founder.<\/p>\n<p>According to some (like the NBA; the NHL realized the folly &amp; realigned divisions), DC, Virginia &amp; Maryland are the Southeast. I suppose the case for most of the Old Dominion is fairly strong, but semantics aside, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skisoutheast.com\/\"><strong>SkiSoutheast<\/strong><\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skisoutheast.com\/resorts\/\"><strong>profiles<\/strong><\/a> &amp; news of Virginia, Maryland, West By God Virginia &amp; more southern resorts. It&#8217;s enthusiastically updated often, a must-read if you want to go to a WV resort or further south. They are looking for people to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skisoutheast.com\/want-join-skisoutheast-team\/\"><strong>join their team too<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lifttickettv.com\/\"><strong>LiftTicketTV<\/strong><\/a> gives a family perspective on skiing, mostly in Pennsylvania, but sometimes further out. They are most active on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCprPqEpQEyRpKXkeEFSLOtw\/videos\"><strong>youtube<\/strong><\/a>, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lifttickettv\"><strong>twitter<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Your annual cinematic inspiration<\/h3>\n<p>Pronounced \u201cshee-ing,\u201d skiing is fast becoming the most popular of all winter sports.
