Frank Robinson, first Washington Nationals manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Frank Robinson<\/strong> was a baseball legend &#8212; he won the MVP in both leagues, was the first black manager in the majors, hit two grand slams in one game at RFK Stadium and was name-checked in the church of baseball preamble in <em>Bull Durham<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/m\/2522579883\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He was also the first manager of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century Washington Nationals and that&#8217;s how I remember him here.<\/p>\n<p>Coming with the franchise from Montreal, the move seemed to inspire Robinson and his team. The 2005 Nats were an incredible 50-31 halfway through with a team that had no business being that good. We found out later that he knew it and even said as much to Barry Svrluga, all-time great Nats beat writer for <em>The Post<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>While the much-celebrated <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Bkr2Fz5jgAE\"><strong>confrontation between Robinson and Mike Scioscia deserves its notoriety<\/strong><\/a>, my favorite moment from Robinson was Memorial Day 2005. Playing the Atlanta Braves, Robinson got the umpires to overturn a Brian Jordan home run. What <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2005\/05\/432.html\">I wrote in 2005<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/05\/30\/AR2005053001107.html\"><strong>Tom Boswell describes how Frank Robinson got the umps to change the call<\/strong><\/a> (<em>The Post<\/em>). When he was vice president of on-field operations he worked with the umpires for a few years and learned how they make their decisions. Using that knowledge, he got them to overturn the call.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Peaking in early July, the Nats crashed down to Earth and never recovered in the rest of his tenure. in 2006, he <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2006\/05\/nats-take-another-series-robinson-turns-into-dick-vermeil.html\"><strong>broke down when he had to pull catcher Matt LeCroy<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2xzeCfKEEpE\">VIDEO<\/a>) from game after allowing 7 stolen bases.<\/p>\n<p>While managing the Nats, President George W. Bush awarded Robinson the Presidential Medal of Freedom as well.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7m8O7jhFFSU\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Nats were ten games worse in 2006 and Nats GM Jim Bowden and the newly established Lerner ownership <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2006\/09\/nats-take-fleas-14-innings-before-falling-robinson-done.html\"><strong>fumbled<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2007\/01\/d-c-papers-catch-up-on-robinson-story.html\"><strong>his<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2007\/01\/boswell-on-robinson.html\"><strong>departure<\/strong><\/a>. The success Robinson achieved in D.C. was impressive given the circumstances. Reconciliation between the team and original skipper came years later with a first pitch before the first NLDS game in DC, as well as his name immortalized in the Ring of Honor.
