D.C. region braces for closure of Shoppers stores<\/strong><\/a> – Washington Business Journal<\/em>
\nALEXANDRIA, Va. —<\/strong> The Shoppers Food Warehouse chain may be closing down as its parent company, United Natural Foods Inc. is selling off stores; the one closest to me in Landmark Center became a Giant Food.<\/p>\n

The changes will have a significant impact on the D.C.-area grocery business, however, given that there are 36 Shoppers stores across Greater Washington and Baltimore. In terms of market share, Shoppers is the fifth largest grocer in the D.C. region.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A Baltimore TV station, WJZ<\/em>, ran a report saying<\/strong><\/a> there were no immediate plans after the WBJ<\/em> story ran.<\/p>\n

While it isn’t the 1980s grocery situation with Giant, Safeway and few other options, Shoppers leaving the market could have serious ramifications in the communities and workforce left behind, particularly if Giant doesn’t pick up all the stores.<\/p>\n

Though I’m not a regular SFW shopper, I don’t look forward to the chain closing down. Shoppers biggest claim to fame is their Colossal Donuts. Of all the mass market fresh donut options in BeltwayLand, Colossal are my favorite for several reasons: <\/p>\n
