{"id":27249,"date":"2019-08-27T20:49:53","date_gmt":"2019-08-28T00:49:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/?p=27249"},"modified":"2019-08-27T20:49:53","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T00:49:53","slug":"the-holmes-run-trail-is-never-whole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/2019\/08\/the-holmes-run-trail-is-never-whole\/","title":{"rendered":"The Holmes Run Trail is never whole"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ALEXANDRIA, Va. \u2014<\/strong> The torrential rains of July 8, 2019 washed out a section of the Holmes Run Trail just west of Ripley Street near Interstate 395. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexandriava.gov\/recreation\/info\/default.aspx?id=110579\"><strong>According the city web site<\/strong><\/a>, &#8220;the Holmes Run stream levels surged over 12 feet causing significant damage to paved and unpaved sections of Holmes Run Trail&#8230;The extent of the damage will result in extended trail closures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Not even a year earlier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewashcycle.com\/2018\/11\/holmes-run-trail-bridge-is-open.html\"><strong>this section opened after extensive reconstruction<\/strong><\/a> (<em>WashCycle<\/em>). It&#8217;s likely to be a long-term closure. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexandriava.gov\/recreation\/info\/default.aspx?id=110802\"><strong>Restoration is underway<\/strong><\/a>, but no timeline has been given by the city.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the latest in a string of troubles that have kept the trail which connects Columbia Pike in Fairfax County and Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria from being continuous.<\/p>\n<p>Damage near Parklawn pool just over across the city\/county border was also reported. Since at least 2018, a portion near Beauregard has been detoured due to portions of the trail washing out.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wfyurasko\/31877844257\" title=\"Holmes Run Trail closed west of Beauregard Street\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/7917\/31877844257_9dbf968c36_b.jpg?resize=1024%2C498&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"498\" alt=\"Holmes Run Trail closed west of Beauregard Street\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In 2013, <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2014\/11\/alexandria-holmes-run-trail-reopened.html\"><strong>a sewer line was damaged<\/strong><\/a> and much of the trail was closed until late 2014 while repairs were made.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wfyurasko\/10669006946\" title=\"temporary sewer line over Holmes Run\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/7447\/10669006946_6abfd2aabb_b.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" alt=\"temporary sewer line over Holmes Run\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Proximity to waterway has risks for any infrastructure, but this just seems like piling on. A regular high water trail is posted in Alexandria&#8217;s West End.
