{"id":27589,"date":"2019-11-29T08:26:35","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T13:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/?p=27589"},"modified":"2019-11-29T08:26:35","modified_gmt":"2019-11-29T13:26:35","slug":"2019-2020-dc-commuter-skier-preview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/2019\/11\/2019-2020-dc-commuter-skier-preview\/","title":{"rendered":"2019-2020 DC Commuter skier preview"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2019-2020 Washington, D.C. area commuter ski season started early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The transition seemed more abrupt than normal this year &#8212; the end of summer and early fall activities like <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/dc-area-kayak-rentals\"><strong>kayaking<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/tag\/2019-world-series-champions\">baseball<\/a><\/strong> (a little later this year!) gave way at the same time as Daylight Saving Time. A little more than two weeks after&nbsp;trick or treating in the 70\u00b0 temperatures, ski areas as close as Bryce in Virginia and Roundtop near Harrisburg, Pa. opened for business.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Snow started falling in West Virginia in October, as it often does, in mid-October. Snowshoe Mountain may or may not be a daytrip for Washingtonians, but the first snowflakes are always noteworthy. Seven Springs, in Western Pennsylvania saw some snow on November 1. Snow guns started firing up by the second week of the month throughout the Keystone state (though not the closest to D.C.).&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I have for several years, I publish a guide for commuter skiers form the Washingtonian perspective &#8212; folks like me that may take a day trip or three to regional ski areas. I have been fortunate to ski throughout the mid-Atlantic and I like to share the experience and encourage others. When it comes to these dark, cold months I have a a saying: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/tag\/dont-hate-winter-us-it\">Don&#8217;t hate winter, use it<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">January 21 Update<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2020\/01\/skiing-january-18-2020-elk-mountain.html\">I skied Elk Mountain<\/a><\/strong> in Northeast Pennsylvania for the first time on January 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">December 22 Update<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/articles\/1599\">Just in Time for the Holidays, All Mid-Atlantic Resorts are Open<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; <em>DCSk<\/em>i<br>Every thing seems to be open, but a warming trend has arrived. Vail Resorts bought out Peak (the Sacklers also own Purdue Pharma and are having <em>some problems<\/em>) after only one season.&nbsp;The upshot of this latest consolidation &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/news\/2019\/11\/season-passes-see-another-price-hike-as-roundtop-mountain-resort-changes-hands-again.html\"><strong>high costs for skiers who just want to ski nearby<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Patriot-News<\/em>). Skiers willing to travel further have options with their seasons passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking of ski area ownership with that may or may not have issues with prescription drugs, <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2019\/03\/west-virginias-timberline-ski-resort-closed-forever.html\" target=\"_blank\">Timberline in West Virginia&#8217;s chronic impending disaster is no longer impending &#8212; it closed<\/a><\/strong>. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2019\/11\/timberline-saved-west-virginia-ski-area-purchased-may-return-for-2020-2021-season.html\"><strong>purchased at auction<\/strong><\/a> by an Indiana state senator that wanted to abolish child labor laws. The Poconos, it ain&#8217;t. I had my best day of skiing here, right after the <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/2014\/02\/alexandria-va-pitchers-and-catchers-day-storm-snowfall-total-at-8-a-m-8-5-inches.html\">Pitchers and Catchers Day Storm in 2014<\/a>. At only 90 minutes from the Capital Beltway, it&#8217;s an excellent option for D.C. commuter skiers. It&#8217;s been well-run, but moves its third owner in as many seasons<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Mid-Atlantic ski areas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have also skied at Liberty, Roundtop and Montage Mountain but that predated the blog.  Liberty is closest, just over the Mason Dixon Line off of US 15. Roundtop is near Harrisburg, so further away than Whitetail with less vertical. Maryland&#8217;s only resort Wisp was also visited when I was in scouts, but that&#8217;s too long ago to to count. Montage though, that&#8217;s a steep mountain near Scranton &#8212; quite a distance, but on my list to revisit with Pennsylvania friends.<br><br>I have yet to make it to Seven Springs and Hidden Valley in Western Pennsylvania or several Poconos venues like Shawnee, Big Bear and Elk. I&#8217;ve heard good things about the latter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Stocking stuffers for your 4th and 5th graders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pennsylvania and West Virginia both have state wide ski passes available for 4th and 5th graders. My oldest received his<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skipa.com\/kids\/4th5th-grade-snowpass\"> PA ski pass<\/a><\/strong> ( $40) for Christmas the last two years, but has aged out of it. This year, <a href=\"https:\/\/ski-wv.myshopify.com\/collections\/frontpage\/products\/4th-and-5th-grade-promotion\"><strong>West Virginia has started selling passports<\/strong><\/a> ($25).<br><br>Other states offer it &#8212; learn more on this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/forum\/98152\"><strong>DC Ski forum post<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">January is also &#8220;Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month&#8221; in Pennsylvania. Details from the <em>Tribune-Review<\/em>: <a href=\"https:\/\/triblive.com\/lifestyles\/more-lifestyles\/pa-resorts-offering-january-learn-to-ski-and-snowboard-specials\/\"><strong>Pa. resorts offering January \u2018Learn to Ski and Snowboard\u2019 specials<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ski Lorton?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As reported earlier this year, an indoor ski slope may be coming to Fairfax County. The plan would build <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2019\/06\/ski-lorton-an-indoor-ski-slope-may-be-coming-to-northern-virginia.html\"><strong>a facility with 280 feet of vertical drop at the Lorton landfill<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More skiing sites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several sites provide important coverage of our region&#8217;s ski areas. They are great for finding special deals, getting insight on what ski areas are really like, conditions and the community of Mid-Atlantic skiing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DC Ski<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since time immemorial <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/\">dcski.c<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"om (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">o<\/a><\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"om (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>m<\/strong><\/a> has shared <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/newsvault\/\"><strong>news<\/strong><\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"snow conditions (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/conditions\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>snow conditions<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/weather\/\"><strong>weather<\/strong><\/a>, in-depth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/resorts\/\"><strong>resort profiles<\/strong><\/a> as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/26768286366\/\"><strong>facebook page<\/strong><\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcski.com\/forum\/\"><strong>forums<\/strong><\/a>. Way back in 2012, publisher M. Scott Smith joined me in a Q&amp;A.  The community in the forums is strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skidome<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/skidome2.skidome.org\/\"><strong>Skidome.org<\/strong><\/a> focuses on the southern Pennsylvania resorts closest to D.C. and has <a href=\"http:\/\/skidome.org\/skidome2\/join\/\"><strong>discounts<\/strong><\/a> for regular skiers. The site is quite extensive and it turns out, one of my co-workers (now in the Sierra Nevadas) was a founder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SkiSoutheast<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to some (like the NBA; the NHL realized the folly &amp; realigned divisions), DC, Virginia &amp; Maryland are the Southeast. I suppose the case for most of the Old Dominion is fairly strong, but semantics aside, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skisoutheast.com\/\"><strong>SkiSoutheast<\/strong><\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skisoutheast.com\/resorts\/\"><strong>profiles<\/strong><\/a> &amp; news of Virginia, Maryland, West By God Virginia &amp; more southern resorts. It&#8217;s a fan site updated often, a must-read if you want to go to a WV resort or further south. They also run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resortcams.com\/ski-cams\/\"><strong>ResortCams Ski cams<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LiftTicketTV<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lifttickettv.com\/\"><strong>LiftTicketTV<\/strong><\/a> gives a family perspective on skiing, mostly in Pennsylvania, but sometimes further out. They are most active on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCprPqEpQEyRpKXkeEFSLOtw\/videos\"><strong>youtube<\/strong><\/a>, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lifttickettv\"><strong>twitter<\/strong><\/a>. The dad is apparently a colleague of one of my Penn State friends &#8212; the one with the Reagan-era Rossi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ski swag<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"SKI THE EAST (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skitheeast.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>SKI THE EAST<\/strong><\/a> celebrates eastern snow sports with an extensive store. I got the <a href=\"http:\/\/skitheeast.net\/products\/mule-kick-tie-navy?_pos=5&amp;_sid=f33fd1235&amp;_ss=r\"><strong>mule kick tie<\/strong><\/a> as a gift, but sadly the SKI THE EAST stickers didn&#8217;t come with it. They are also affiliated with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Meathead Films (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skitheeast.net\/collections\/meathead-films\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Meathead Films<\/strong><\/a>. Though both are New England focused, 2010&#8217;s <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Work it Out (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skitheeast.net\/collections\/meathead-films\/products\/work-it-out-dvd\" target=\"_blank\">Work it Out<\/a><\/em> features freestyle skiing at the Lincoln Memorial. Ah, <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/category\/snowpocalypse\"><strong>Snowpocalypse<\/strong><\/a>, you were memorable. Or was that <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/category\/snowmageddon\"><strong>Snowmageddon<\/strong><\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Mount Brodie Ski Shop (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redbubble.com\/people\/mountbrodie\/shop\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mount Brodie Ski Shop<\/strong><\/a> sells merch inspired by the great ski movie of the 1980s, <em>Better Off Dead<\/em> (sorry, not sorry, <em>Hot Dog<\/em>, <em>Ski Patrol<\/em>, <em>Ski School<\/em>). Would I like to have a who wall in the basement dedicated to my skiing equipment and swag from these two stores? Duh. Do we still need lightsabres imposed onto the ski pole duel? Double-duh. Is Charles De Marr the greater skiing coach alive?
