{"id":27815,"date":"2020-02-02T21:11:15","date_gmt":"2020-02-03T02:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/?p=27815"},"modified":"2020-02-02T21:11:15","modified_gmt":"2020-02-03T02:11:15","slug":"the-holmes-run-trail-may-be-whole-again-in-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/2020\/02\/the-holmes-run-trail-may-be-whole-again-in-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"The Holmes Run Trail may be whole again&#8230;in 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ALEXANDRIA, Va.<\/strong> &#8211; Flooding in 2018 and 2019 closed major portions of the Holmes Run Trail. $6&nbsp;million (unfunded) and three more years are what it&#8217;ll take to reopen the full trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city has posted a web page with some details, but it does not offer specifics for reconstruction priority: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/alexandriava.gov\/tes\/info\/default.aspx?id=113304\">Holmes Run Trail Closures<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Has the HRT ever been completely open end to end since the extension to Columbia Pike? I&#8217;m not sure.  <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2014\/11\/alexandria-holmes-run-trail-reopened.html\"><strong>A sewer line break closed the Fairfax County section<\/strong><\/a> for an extended period into 2014. Construction of the new Ripley Street bridge took nearly a year. <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2019\/08\/the-holmes-run-trail-is-never-whole.html\"><strong>West of the bridge was washed out<\/strong><\/a>. Just east of Duke Street, <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2019\/10\/the-holmes-run-is-never-whole-bridge-out-near-duke-street.html\"><strong>another bridge closed late in 2019<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This disheartening news comes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alxnow.com\/2020\/01\/30\/seminary-road-diet-critics-commiserate-at-ramparts\/\"><strong>as backlash over the Seminary Road reconfiguration<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Alexandria Now<\/em>) is organizing. Their outrage &#8212; travel times may be <em>a minute longer<\/em> during 15-30 minute intervals during peak commuting periods. The other 23\u00bd hours a day are unchanged. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alxnow.com\/2019\/12\/03\/whats-ahead-for-the-eisenhower-valley\/\"><strong>Eisenhower Partnership has also come out against bicycle infrastructure<\/strong><\/a> in an <em>Alexandria Now<\/em> article. The Holmes Run Trail feeds into the Eisenhower Trail. I ride that stretch about 75 times a year for recreation and commuting.<br><br>On February 6, <em>Alexandria Now<\/em> caught up to the story:  <strong>\u200b<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alxnow.com\/2020\/02\/06\/portion-of-holmes-run-trail-still-closed-following-last-years-floods-with-no-relief-in-sight\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Portion of Holmes Run Trail Still Closed Following Last Year\u2019s Floods with No Relief in Sight<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s time for city officials to show whether their commitment non-automotive mobility is real or just virtue signaling.
