As we have seen with <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2020\/02\/the-holmes-run-trail-may-be-whole-again-in-2023.html\"><strong>trail infrastructure elsewhere<\/strong><\/a>, that would a years-long closure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More about Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in September 2018, Friend of the Mount Vernon Trail believes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;the trail supports health and high quality of life, is an important historical and environmental resource and&nbsp;is a cornerstone  of our regional transportation system.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button aligncenter is-style-squared\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background has-accent-background-color\" href=\"https:\/\/mountvernontrail.org\/about-us\/\">Learn more about Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mount Vernon Trail history<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1972, Alexandrians <strong>Ellen Pickering<\/strong> and <strong>Barbara Lynch<\/strong> conceived of the trail and worked with the National Park Service to get it started. Initially a volunteer effort, the trail soon became popular and began to take form. The power plant viaduct was opened in 1983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coincidentally, December 7 is an important date in MVT history as well &#8212; completion to the Theodore Roosevelt Island parking area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">On this day in 1988 &#8211; The Mt. Vernon Trail extension to Theodore Roosevelt Island opened. This created a connection between the Mt. Vernon Trail and, what the Post at the time called, the Custis-Lee, I-66 Trail (now just the Custis). <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1GknNknIYL\">pic.twitter.com\/1GknNknIYL<\/a><\/p>\u2014 DC Bike History (@DCBikeHistory1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DCBikeHistory1\/status\/1336066435496361984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 7, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/center>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The connector to Rosslyn had opened earlier that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail also completed service projects on the wooden viaduct, the Trollheim Bridge this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Our volunteers used our new pressure washer for the first time on Trollheim Bridge today with incredible results.
