Malme in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Facebook Group Northeast Roads (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/northeastroads\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Facebook Group Northeast Roads<\/strong><\/a> (private). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why renumber?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, most traffic continues from the SW Freeway to the SE Freeway and two numbers adds confusion. From the report:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Origin-destination studies have determined that approximately two-thirds  of eastbound I-395 motorists travel through the I-395\/I-695 interchange  continuing onto I-695, which supports the continuation of I-395 along  the existing mainline of I-695. This, in addition to the redesignation  of I-395 along the 3rd St tunnel section to I-195 (considered under a  different application), will allow DDOT to present more typical guidance  through the I-395\/I-695 interchange and mitigate a portion of the  current confusion-related crashes.    <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I-695 to be decommissioned<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"840\" height=\"437\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ddot-application-to-renumber-695-to-395.jpg?resize=840%2C437&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28865\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ddot-application-to-renumber-695-to-395.jpg?w=840&amp;ssl=1 840w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ddot-application-to-renumber-695-to-395.jpg?resize=300%2C156&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ddot-application-to-renumber-695-to-395.jpg?resize=768%2C400&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I-695 was on maps for over 4 decades before it was<a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2011\/12\/dc-i-695-posted-on-11th-street-bridge.html\"><strong> actually posted on signs<\/strong><\/a> in 2011. Additionally, the <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/tags\/dc-295\"><strong>295 corridor<\/strong><\/a> (that&#8217;s another long story) encounters <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2020\/08\/terrible-mlb-com-headline-for-terrible-nats-baltimore-game.html\"><strong>another I-695 near Baltimore<\/strong><\/a>, about 35 miles north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were more extensive plans for I-695 &#8212; it was originally conceived as beginning at I-66 near the Kennedy Center and tunneling under The Mall near Lincoln Memorial. In 2018, an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2018\/08\/the-original-i-695-briefly-returns-to-d-c.html\">&#8220;original&#8221; I-695 sign was revealed<\/a><\/strong> after a replacement project on I-66 westbound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cancel culture: The fourth I-695 to go away<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According <em>to kurumi.com<\/em>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"three other I-695s have been cancelled (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kurumi.com\/roads\/3di\/i695.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>three other I-695s have been cancelled<\/strong><\/a> in Philadelphia, Central New Jersey and Boston, respectively. Only the Baltimore area and the Bronx will have surviving I-695s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I-195 finally arrives in D.C.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The portion of I-395 north of the Southwest\/Southeast Freeway interchange, also known as the Center Leg Freeway, will become I-195.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"839\" height=\"436\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ddot-application-to-renumber-395-to-195.jpg?resize=839%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ddot-application-to-renumber-395-to-195.jpg?w=839&amp;ssl=1 839w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ddot-application-to-renumber-395-to-195.jpg?resize=300%2C156&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ddot-application-to-renumber-395-to-195.jpg?resize=768%2C399&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renaming the Center Leg I-195 may have been proposed previously &#8212; I saw at least two map companies show that designation in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lucky #7 for I-195<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Virginia (Richmond) and Maryland (BWI Airport) have their own I-195s. All told, there will be seven distinct I-195 spurs (Florida, Virginia, DC, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island\/Massachusetts and Maine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I-195 will be tie I-295 as the most ubiquitous three digit interstate. At least until North Carolina&#8217;s I-295 is official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MORE FROM KURUMI.COM:<\/strong> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"I-195 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kurumi.com\/roads\/3di\/i195.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>I-195<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will I-395 change cardinal directions?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current I-395 is posted as a north\/south route, just as it is in Norhtern Virginia. Now that the road is predominately east-west in the District, it would be reasonable to mark it as such. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A brief look at D.C. interstate history<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I-195 will the Center Leg Freeway&#8217;s third designation. It was I-95 until 1977, when it was renumbered to I-395. Freeway revolts, inspired in part by the SW Freeway displacement of thousands of residents, led to the cancellation of I-95 north of New York Ave. I-95 was rerouted to the south\/east portions of the Capital Beltway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I-66, I-266 (never built), I-70S (now I-270), I-295 and I-95 were planned in the District.
