{"id":28915,"date":"2021-01-28T20:42:40","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T01:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/?p=28915"},"modified":"2021-01-28T20:42:40","modified_gmt":"2021-01-29T01:42:40","slug":"brood-x-cicadas-returning-to-d-c-area-in-spring-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/2021\/01\/brood-x-cicadas-returning-to-d-c-area-in-spring-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Brood X cicadas returning to D.C. area in spring 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/periodical-cicada-brood-x-10-will-emerge-in-15-states-in-2021\/\"><strong>Periodical cicada Brood X (10) will emerge in 15 states in 2021<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>&#8211;  <em>Cicada Mania <\/em><br>The seventeen year cycle of Brood X cicadas is climaxing later this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. can expect to see and hear the insects for about six weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Typically beginning in mid-May and ending in late June. These cicadas  will begin to emerge approximately when the soil 8\u2033 beneath the ground  reaches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cicadamania.com\/cicadas\/64-5-degrees-fahrenheit\/\">64 degrees Fahrenheit<\/a>. A nice, warm rain will often trigger an emergence. Back in 2004, people began reporting emergences around May, 13th. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A brief preview in 2017<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four years ago &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2017\/05\/cicadas-brood-vi-or-possibly-brood-x-stragglers-seen-in-alexandria-va.html\"><strong>brood X stragglers<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; appeared in some areas, including Alexandria. They were considerably more limited than 2004. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The last major emergence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you can&#8217;t recall the last time Brood X arrived en masse in 2004, here is some perspective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Washington, D.C. did not have a baseball team and Montreal did.<\/li><li>NPR had just run Bob Edwards off Morning Edition for some reason.<\/li><li>Some Harvard dweeb was just starting a hot or not web site.<\/li><li>Dan Snyder, put his meddling, unsuccessful start as Redskins owner behind him and brought back Joe Gibbs, ensuring stability, respectability and success for the long-term.<\/li><li>The last ever Star Wars movie, <em>Revenge of the Sith<\/em>, was still a year away.<\/li><li>The two worst teams in the NHL were the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins.<\/li><li>Spider-Man 2 debuted.<\/li><li>Some Penn State alum in Pentagon City had started blogging.<\/li><li><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CTAud5O7Qqk\" target=\"_blank\">Float On<\/a><\/em>, <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ijk4j-r7qPA\" target=\"_blank\">Take Me Out<\/a><\/em> and <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"All These Things I Have Done (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sZTpLvsYYHw\" target=\"_blank\">All These Things I Have Done<\/a><\/em> charted. Unfortunately, so did <em>Let\u2019s Get it Started<\/em> and <em>The Reason<\/em>.<\/li><li>DC United was on their way to an unprecedented fourth MLS Cup.<\/li><li>The original Woodrow Wilson Bridge was still in service.<\/li><li>The Boston Red Sox hadn\u2019t won a World Series in 86 years.<\/li><li>Blockbuster Video had 9,000 locations<\/li><li>Ray Charles, Christopher Reeve and Ronald Reagan were still alive.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2006\/03\/foggy-bottom-ale-olde-heurich-brewing-company-closing.html\"><strong>Foggy Bottom Ale<\/strong><\/a> was DC&#8217;s &#8220;hometown&#8221; beer<\/li><li>WMATA&#8217;s Silver Line was not approved yet.<\/li><li>You could attend a sporting event and <strong>not <\/strong>hear <em>Seven Nation Army<\/em><\/li><li>You could attend a sporting event<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Periodical cicada Brood X (10) will emerge in 15 states in 2021 &#8211; Cicada Mania The seventeen year cycle of Brood X cicadas is climaxing later this year.
