The city&#8217;s trail network is decent enough for an experienced cyclist, <em>but is it good enough for an 11 year old to navigate?<\/em> Not quite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"holmes-run-trail\">Holmes Run Trail <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bOver 2 years after <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2019\/08\/the-holmes-run-trail-is-never-whole.html\"><strong>a major storm wiped out portions of the Holmes Run Trail<\/strong><\/a>, we&#8217;re still over 2 years away from complete restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexandriava.gov\/tes\/info\/default.aspx?id=113304#TimelineofMajorActivities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>PROJECT TIMELINE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"south-of-duke-street\">South of Duke Street<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bThe <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2019\/10\/the-holmes-run-is-never-whole-bridge-out-near-duke-street.html\">bridge south of Duke Street that was closed in fall 2019<\/a><\/strong> has been removed (pictured above), but the timeline Mayor Justin Wilson tweeted in 2020 was not met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here\u2019s the latest: \u201cStaff report that the ped\/bike bridge South of Duke will able to be repaired within the next 12 months. It is a smaller and stand alone project. The rest of the repairs are more complicated with design in FY21 and build in FY22.&quot;<\/p>&mdash; Justin Wilson (@justindotnet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/justindotnet\/status\/1297552627702562817?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 23, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project web site says that &#8220;Bridge replacement is anticipated in summer\/fall 2022&#8221; a year later than projected in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s 3 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-395-connection\">I-395 connection<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190715_holmes-run-trail-washout.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"998\" height=\"486\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190715_holmes-run-trail-washout.jpg?resize=998%2C486&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Washed out portion of the Holmes Run Trail\" class=\"wp-image-27256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190715_holmes-run-trail-washout.jpg?w=998&amp;ssl=1 998w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190715_holmes-run-trail-washout.jpg?resize=300%2C146&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190715_holmes-run-trail-washout.jpg?resize=768%2C374&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 998px) 100vw, 998px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The link that passes under Interstate 395 is not expected until &#8220;Late 2023 to Spring 2024: All repairs anticipated to be completed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s 5 years <strong>if<\/strong> this plan holds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, if a kid was 11 years old when the trail was disconnected, they&#8217;ll be 16 when its reconnected. Those are peak bike-riding years lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mobility-limited\">Mobility limited<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the trail was whole, it was quicker to bicycle between Seminary Valley and the two pool clubs just over the Fairfax County line than it was to drive. I&#8217;m curious if those pool clubs have had anything to say to the city. Perhaps not, given that they are merely adjacent to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The detour, utilizing sharrows along Sanger Ave. and the Beauregard St. sidewalk is possible, but not particularly pleasant. In short, I&#8217;d be nervous with a kid bicycling along that stretch because of aggressive drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know the local &#8220;civic association&#8221; (no link, they don&#8217;t even have SSL on their site) has merely shared information rather than engage in advocacy for the Holmes Run Trail. They did throw a tantrum about Seminary Road reconfiguration though. Needless to say, I&#8217;m not paying them a membership fee.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexandriava.gov\/tes\/info\/default.aspx?id=113304#TimelineofMajorActivities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"eisenhower-trail\">Eisenhower Trail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between Holmes Run and Telegraph Road, the Eisenhower Trail is a very useful connection with only three at-grade crossings. Once past the Telegraph Road overpass, the trail transitions to sidewalk at the Metro station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alxnow.com\/2021\/12\/13\/city-looking-for-feedback-on-new-eisenhower-trail\/\"><strong>City looking for feedback on new E<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alxnow.com\/2021\/12\/13\/city-looking-for-feedback-on-new-eisenhower-trail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">isenhower trail<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; <em>Alexandria Now<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m24!1m12!1m3!1d12437.155667971472!2d-77.09761482331312!3d38.80293279553532!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m9!3e1!4m3!3m2!1d38.8044049!2d-77.10442809999999!4m3!3m2!1d38.8014791!2d-77.0731069!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1644076839892!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether using the sidewalk or the travel lane, Eisenhower Ave. isn&#8217;t very friendly for cyclists. Unfortunately, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alxnow.com\/2019\/12\/03\/whats-ahead-for-the-eisenhower-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Eisenhower Partnership prefers this setup <\/strong><\/a>(<em>Alexandria Now<\/em>). In 2019, founder <strong>Agn\u00e9s Artemel<\/strong> said the corridor is suburban density and too spread out. Another member, <strong>Kay Taylor<\/strong> said bikes are not transportation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s hard enough to get any cycling infrastructure built generally and this mindset from local membership organizations won&#8217;t help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For what it&#8217;s worth, I travel through the Eisenhower Corridor on my bicycle 50 &#8211; 75 times a year. By car? Less than 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"friends-of-the-mount-vernon-trail-news\">Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail news<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50939964996_b23c93d03f_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the bright side, another bike corridor that travels through Alexandria is getting attention. <a href=\"https:\/\/mountvernontrail.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail<\/strong><\/a> has been improving the National Park Service maintained trail for several years now. I have personally volunteered several times and look forward to doing more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arlnow.com\/2021\/12\/14\/new-maintenance-partnership-aims-to-improve-upkeep-of-the-heavily-used-mt-vernon-trail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>New maintenance partnership aims to improve upkeep of the heavily-used Mt. Vernon Trail<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; <em>Arlington Now<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"spokes-etc-sold-to-trek\">Spokes Etc. sold to Trek<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/3938\/32569372623_9875de716b_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Fairlington Centre Spokes Etc.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arlnow.com\/2022\/01\/13\/national-brand-trek-bike-to-buy-local-shop-spokes-etc-ballston-location-fate-unknown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trek to buy local bike shop Spokes Etc.<\/a><\/strong>  &#8211; <em>Arlington Now<\/em><br>Even though my Trek was purchased at Spokes Etc., I&#8217;m not excited about this news. My brand loyalty is if I like the product enough to buy it, great. Otherwise, I&#8217;ll get another company&#8217;s product.<br><br>Big corporate consolidation is typically not consumer-friendly. Trek has been buying up bike shops for several years now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycleretailer.com\/retail-news\/2017\/02\/02\/trek-buys-four-store-chain-revolution-cycles#.Ye36HPhOm01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>including Revolution Cycles in 2017<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Bicycle Retailer<\/em>) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trekbikes.com\/us\/en_US\/retail\/springfield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Springfield location of The Bike Lane<\/strong><\/a>. I hope the local bike owners made a pretty penny at least. It can be <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/dc\/2019\/12\/another-dc-bicycle-shop-the-bike-rack-is-closing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>a difficult industry<\/strong><\/a> (<em>WTOP<\/em>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u200bProgress on Alexandria dedicated bicycle infrastructure moves slowly.
