{"id":29915,"date":"2022-03-22T08:44:56","date_gmt":"2022-03-22T12:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/?p=29915"},"modified":"2022-03-22T08:44:56","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T12:44:56","slug":"ryan-zimmerman-number-retirement-means-11-will-be-retired-by-three-dc-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/2022\/03\/ryan-zimmerman-number-retirement-means-11-will-be-retired-by-three-dc-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Ryan Zimmerman number retirement means 11 will be retired by three DC teams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On March 21, 2022, Washington Nationals owner Mark Lerner announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/washington\/nationals\/nationals-retire-ryan-zimmermans-no-11-june\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>that #11 would be retired for Ryan Zimmerman<\/strong><\/a> (<em>NBC Sports Washington)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zimmerman, sometimes referred to as <strong>Mr. National<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/category\/mr-walkoff\">Mr. Walkoff<\/a><\/strong>*, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalbaseball.com\/2022\/2\/15\/22935997\/ryan-zimmerman-officially-announces-retirement-washington-nationals-first-round-pick-calls-career\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>announced his retirement earlier this year<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Federal Baseball<\/em>). He played 16 seasons over 17 years for the Nats, missing 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Zimmerman was the first DC draft choice of the 21st century in 2005. He joined the big league team in September of that year wearing #25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2006, Zimmerman switched to the now familiar #11. Two other players, Jeffrey Hammonds and Junior Spivey, previously wore #11 in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DC sports greatest number<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Nationals are the third DC team to retire #11. Many DC titles have featured prominent players wearing this repdigit. I cannot think of any other city to have so many prominent players wearing the same number. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/article\/Celebrating-Houston-s-No-34s-Earl-Campbell-12559070.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Houston and #34<\/strong> <\/a>(<em>Houston Chronicle<\/em>) maybe the most similar, but I think much like <a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/tag\/2019-world-series-champions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>the 2019 World Series<\/strong><\/a>, DC wins out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hall of Famers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2;color:#32373c\" class=\"wp-block-atomic-blocks-ab-profile-box square ab-has-avatar ab-font-size-18 ab-block-profile ab-profile-columns\"><div class=\"ab-profile-column ab-profile-avatar-wrap\"><div class=\"ab-profile-image-wrap\"><figure class=\"ab-profile-image-square\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"270\" height=\"240\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ab-profile-avatar wp-image-19052\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/11-elvin-hayes-bullets.jpg?resize=270%2C240&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ab-profile-column ab-profile-content-wrap\"><h2 class=\"ab-profile-name\" style=\"color:#32373c\">Elvin Hayes<\/h2><p class=\"ab-profile-title\" style=\"color:#32373c\">Washington Bullets (now Wizards)<\/p><div class=\"ab-profile-text\"><p>Hayes played 9 seasons for the Bullets. The power forward was a perennial All-Star and a member of the 1977-1978 NBA Champions, the only championship in franchise history.
