{"id":30387,"date":"2022-11-08T18:01:49","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T23:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yurasko.net\/wfy\/?p=30387"},"modified":"2022-11-08T18:01:49","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T23:01:49","slug":"cta-observations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/2022\/11\/cta-observations\/","title":{"rendered":"CTA observations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s some thoughts on the Chicago Transit Authority from the perspective of a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It&#8217;s great album. The horns and Terry Kath, oh wait\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The 7-day Ventra card is the way to go. $25 + $5 for the actual card if you are sticking round more than say, three days. It doesn&#8217;t take long to get your money&#8217;s worth and the option of jumping on even for a few stops makes it an obvious choice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52449751159_3e3aeb0925_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A mass transit line to the international airport? <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/tracking-metro-24-7\/2022\/11\/metros-silver-line-almost-ready-to-open-what-it-looks-like-and-what-itll-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Maybe WMATA should do that<\/strong><\/a> (<em>WTOP<\/em>)\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The L is a legacy system like New York. No frills on the trains or the stations. I think it probably averages fewer MPH than WMATA, but it doesn&#8217;t seem like it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52448955257_f040c5db45_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wooden floors in the Loop stations? Sure.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I appreciate WMATA&#8217;s accessibility a lot more after the CTA. While the O&#8217;Hare station has escalators and elevators, many Loop stations do not. It&#8217;s not superfun with a 5 days of clothes in one&#8217;s luggage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gap between the platform and train is also vertical as well as horizontal. Again, accessibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chicago headways are better than DC and ridership seemed like it was pre-pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52449479176_cf25696af1_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Significant portions of the Blue and Red Lines are in subway in the downtown area. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connections to the Loop are adequately signed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52449991623_ab07bbb9dd_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The elevated structures don&#8217;t seem to be a hindrance to building anywhere in Chicago. The only DC comparisons I can think of are the Red Line through NoMa and the Whitehurst Freeway in Georgetown.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The elevated trains are not as loud as I had expected, even in Loop where tall buildings surround everything. Perhaps its because they move so slow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I used the Blue, Red, Green and Brown lines during my visit. I think I entered\/exited from the following stops O&#8217;Hare, Washington (Blue), Merchandise Mart, Lake (Red), Clark\/Division, Grand, Chicago (red), Addison (Red), Belmont (red), Sheffield (Red), Cermak (Green and Blue) and 35th-Sox.
