BTWD is Friday, May 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Alexandria, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/hourly\/us\/va\/alexandria\/38.80,-77.06\/date\/2023-5-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>it looks to be about 56 and clear at 8 a.m.<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Weather Underground<\/em>). A little cool, but winds under 5 MPH make up for it. The high temperature is headed to the low 70s &#8211; perfect for the ride home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#275600\">An annual tradition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52900331375_b770f67378_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"2022 Bike to Work Day swag, including a water botle, granola bar, bike bell, map, Nutri Grain bar and pink t-shirt.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s fun to get swag for something I already do. Sometimes, a bike shop will offer quick tuneups. BTWD is a good way to get a new t-shirt, water bottle or bike bell.<a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=30890&#038;action=edit#footnote1\"><strong><sup>1<\/sup><\/strong><\/a> In 2017, my bike got blessed.<a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=30890&#038;action=edit#footnote2\"><strong><sup>2<\/sup><\/strong><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year will be my fifth BTWD. The event was created by The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bikeleague.org\/\">League of American Bicyclists<\/a><\/strong><sup><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#footnote3\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/a><\/sup> in 1956.<sup><strong><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#footnote4\">4<\/a><\/strong><\/sup> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waba.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Washington Area Bicyclist Association<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s first BTWD was 2001. Over 10,000 cyclists are participate annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alexandria&#8217;s mayor, <strong>Justin Wilson<\/strong>, typically makes BTWD appearances. It was a good opportunity to remind him that the Holmes Run Trail is never whole. He was understanding and explained why &#8211; supply chain issues, contractor availability. Mayor Wilson also awarded a raffle prize to a dude I see at cookouts from time to time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wfyurasko\/52900331390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52900331390_eb7d266b5c_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"&quot;George Orwell&quot; looks on as Mayor Justin Wilson and a BTWD volunteer make announcements.\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year&#8217;s shirt is green. Other recent colors are raspberry, pink, yellow, light blue and purple. I&#8217;ll take a photo of them together for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/doubleuefwhy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>instagram<\/strong><\/a> over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday is<strong> <\/strong>also the first day of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2023\/05\/coming-soon-to-metro-the-yellow-line-and-potomac-yard-station.html\">Potomac Yard Metro station service<\/a>. <\/strong>There is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biketoworkmetrodc.org\/alexandria-national-landing-at-apta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an afternoon pitstop<\/a><\/strong> there too.<sup><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#footnote5\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#275600\">Register<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BTWD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biketoworkmetrodc.org\/register\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>registration<\/strong><\/a> is open now with pit stops in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland. It&#8217;s rain or shine and it sure looks like it&#8217;ll shine.
