My first was the Orange Line completion to Vienna. My dad took my brother and I to that one. I didn&#8217;t have a blog then, though I commemorated it on <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2006\/06\/orange-line-20th-anniversary.html\"><strong>the 20th anniversary<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2014, I took my sons and wife to the opening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2014\/07\/generations-in-the-marking-the-first-phase-of-metros-silver-line-is-open.html\"><strong>first phase of the Silver Line<\/strong><\/a>. This past November, several days after the <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2022\/11\/the-silver-line-metro-is-complete.html\"><strong>second phase of the Silver Line<\/strong><\/a> opened, I took my youngest son, wife and friend Luigi. I went to back and compared it to 2014. WMATA was more on brand with the color section this time. Both were represented on the welcome sign, though yellow was more prominent. Other promotional areas were generally yellow too. Actual ribbons and bows were displayed too (see feature photo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52913505563_0211b897e5_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it was because yellow is more eye-catching or just because the <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2023\/05\/coming-soon-to-metro-the-yellow-line-and-potomac-yard-station.html\"><strong>Yellow Line was reopened<\/strong><\/a> about two weeks earlier after rehabilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#f5d415\"><strong>From 2013:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2013\/09\/wmatas-new-metro-map-with-silver-line-released.html\"><strong>WMATA\u2019s new Metro map with Silver Line released<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Previous openings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t recall any ribbons or bows at the Orange Line completion, though it was <em>a while ago<\/em>. While there were many more openings, most were in the 20th century before widespread digital photography. I did not attend any of them. Even the <strong>NoMa-Galludet<\/strong> (then New York Ave.) opening was still during the web 1.0 days of 2004. A cursory search of images, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycsubway.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C._Metro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>nycsubway.com&#8217;s extensive archive<\/strong><\/a>, didn&#8217;t yield any examples.<sup><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#footnote1\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pennants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52923115724_5bd78361b1_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metro may not have always used ribbons and bows, but it has always used pennants to celebrate major events like groundbreakings and service openings. The<em> Post<\/em> (soft paywall) covered this in 2014: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/express\/wp\/2014\/08\/26\/metros-pennants-way-predate-the-silver-line-which-is-a-month-old-already\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Metro\u2019s pennants way predate the Silver Line (which is a month old already!)<\/a><\/strong>. We didn&#8217;t get a Silver Line Phase 2 pennant, unfortunately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Footnote<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sup><strong>1<\/strong><\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycsubway.org\/\"><strong>nycsubway.org<\/strong><\/a> arrived in the early days of the internet and is still going strong.
